Madalone Anderson

Madalone A. “Patty” Anderson, 87, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, in a local hospital.

Born on Oct. 27, 1920, in Philadelphia, Pa., she was a 1938 graduate of Norristown High School in Norristown, Pa. She later moved to Lakeland, Fla., where she was a charter member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. In 1942, Patty married her beloved husband of 66 years, Herbert “Andy” Anderson. After living for three years in London, England, and one year in Wisconsin, she moved to Chattanooga where she lived the remainder of her life. She was a Girl Scout Neighborhood Chairperson-Moccasin Bend Council and taught Sunday school and was an Altar Guild member at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. She was most recently a member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family and friends. Patty was a devoted wife and mother and a loving grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was predeceased by her parents, Carl Clifford and Marion Leland; a granddaughter, Laura Gamble; and her husband, Herbert “Andy” Anderson, being survived by two daughters, Pam (Jim) Woodard and Judy (Mac) Elrod; two granddaughters, Lisa (Bob) Leopold and Ashley Woodard; a grandson, Justin Elrod; and one great-granddaughter, Jessica Scruggs.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church with Father Gary Callahan officiating.

Burial will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens in Hixson.

Clara Wanda Bowman, 70, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at a local hospital.

Funeral service is at 1 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jim Barry officiating.

Interment will follow the service at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Ramona Culberson

Ramona Gertrude Culberson, 79, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

She was a long time member of Pilgrim Way Baptist Church in Chickamauga, Ga. She also was a member of the National Poet Society; a loving mother, grandmother, homemaker and friend to everyone who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Leonard Culberson.

Survivors include daughters, Sue and Chris Carpenter, of Chattanooga, Peggy Croft Randall, of Vero Beach, Fla.; sons, Samuel Croft and Melvin Croft, both of Chattanooga; nine grandchildren, Angie, Chris Jr., Brandy, John, Melissa, Davy, Lewis, Stacey and Michael; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today at 11:30 a.m. at the South Crest Chapel with the Rev. Bill Arnold officiating.

Interment will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

William Davis Jr.

William “Bill” Spence Davis Jr., 87, of Hixson, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at his home.

He was born in Sweetwater, Tenn., but moved to Maryville, Tenn., during his childhood. He served in the Navy as a ship fitter second class construction battalion from 1943 to 1945. He was stationed in Saipan during World War II. After moving to Chattanooga in 1961, Bill and his wife, Phyllis, owned and operated Chickamauga Marina. They retired in 1992.

Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Phyllis Evelyn Davis; parents, William Spence Davis Sr., Maryville and Leola Hitch, Orlando, Fla.; sister, Marilee Davis Shubert, Nashville; step-mother, Mary Sue Davis, Maryville; granddaughter, Rachel Cemel; and a great-grandson, Chandler Pursley.

Survivors include his son, William Spence Davis III, of Chattanooga; daughters, Margaret Ann (Buford) Pursley, of Ringgold, Barbara (Don) Brewer, of Chattanooga, and Brenda (Albert) Cemel, of Hixson; sister, Suzanne (Ernest) of Maryville; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Dr. Jim Hensley officiating.

Interment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at the North Chapel.

Ryley Paige Deal, born Sept. 25, 2008, and passed away Monday, Oct. 6, 2008.

She is survived by her parents, Bryan and Ashley Burns Deal; grandfather, John Deal; grandmothers, Patricia Romines and Janet Knight; brother, Jermiah Deal; and sister, Katharine Burns.

Simmy Dunn, of Chattanooga, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at a local health care facility.

He was a native of Etowah, Ala.

He was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. David and Margaret Jones Dunn.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Shirley Dunn; children, Randall (Linda) Dunn, Douglasville, Regina (Glen) Seals, Chattanooga; grandchildren, Dominique and Aisha Dunn, Douglasville, Ga.; one brother, Sammie (Ruth) Dunn, Chattanooga; three sisters, Inez (Lacy) Rice, of Radcliff, Ky., Katherine Gray, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Barbara (Oscar) Preston, Chattanooga; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Magdalene Faulkner, 97, wife of Dr. J.R. Faulkner, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008.

John Glover Green, 78, of Hixson, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, in a local hospital.

Mae G. Groves, 90, of East Ridge, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, in a local hospital.

Mrs. Groves was born in Riceville, Tenn., but had lived in Chattanooga since 1965. She retired from W.M. Cline (Fox) Photo with 27 years of service. She also worked for Loveman’s Department Store and later Proffitts. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her son, Alan (Linda) Groves, Ringgold; daughter, Wanda (Timothy) Kohlmann, Chattanooga; sister, Margaret Clinton, Chattanooga; three grandchildren, Teresa Morgan, Ringgold, Carol Hogan, Red Bank, Steven Groves, Ringgold; and five great-grandchildren, Lindsay Mae Morgan, of Ringgold, Ashley and Alexis Groves, of Red Bank, Velvie and Carlie Groves, of Ringgold.

Kimberly Hill

Kimberly E. Hill, 44, of Knoxville, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at a hospital there.

She was of the Baptist faith. She graduated from Ooltewah High School in 1981.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Kibler and Mada Stinnett.

She is survived by her sons, Justin Tyler Hill, Brandon Lee Hill; parents, Mary and Bob Craig; sister, Kristi (Allen) Green; stepsister, Kimberly (Ernie) Phillips; stepbrother, Todd (Lee) Craig; nieces and nephews, Kayla and Carey Green, Callie, Christopher and Chloe Phillips, Kayce and Ally Craig; and special friend, Mama Lou.

Dale Hugh Jenkins, 77, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008.

He was born in Claxton, Tenn., and was a member of Carpenters Local #74.

Dale loved people, was an avid outdoorsman, loving to hunt, fish and garden.

Survivors are his wife, Edna Albritton Jenkins; two children, Belva Jenkins and Dexter B. Jenkins, both of Chattanooga; four grandchildren, Yolanda Fernandez, Jonathan B. Jenkins, Mykel D. Jenkins and Caitlyn Jenkins; and a brother, Don Jenkins, of Riceville, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Eleanor Stafford Lamb.

Lola F. Payne, 88, of Collegedale died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, in a local health care center.

A longtime resident of Chattanooga and Collegedale, Mrs. Payne was a member of Collegedale Seventh-day Adventist Church. She was a foster parent for over 40 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald G. Payne.

Virginia Sorrells, 81, departed this life Monday, Oct. 6, 2008.

She was a faithful member of Greater Second Missionary Baptist Church, where she served diligently on many church committees throughout the years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis Sorrells, and two sons, Ellis Sorrells Jr. and L. D. Sorrells.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory one daughter, Freda Husain; one brother, Hubert Strong Jr.; three grandsons, Kevin Shareef, Kenneth Sorrells and Waheed Husain; one granddaughter, Adrienne Shareef; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Grady Dewayne Souther, 50, of Chattanooga, graduated from his East Brainerd home to his permanent residence in heaven to live forever with our Lord Jesus Christ on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008.

Emma Taylor

Emma Schroth Taylor, of Chattanooga, went home to be with her Lord and family Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008.

Emma was born in Chattanooga and a graduate of Central High School. She was employed with Atlas and Top Flight for over 50 years. Emma was a former member of Woodland Park Baptist Church, attended Temple Baptist, Calvary Baptist and is currently a member of Hickory Valley Baptist Church. She served as a volunteer for many years at Parkridge Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Taylor; her parents, Louis and Hattie Schroth.

Emma is survived by her four children ,Barbara (Jr.) Gaddis, James (Yvonne) Taylor, Larry Taylor and Diane Taylor; seven grandchildren, Steve, Darrell, David, Jimmy, Amy (Bobby), Stacey and Christopher; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Vickie Parton.

Diana H. Threat, 61, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, in a local nursing facility.

She was employed by Life Touch.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mattie Echols.

Alma I. Upchurch, 72, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008.

She will be dearly missed by her family, may she rest in peace. Ms. Upchurch was of the Baptist faith. She retired as a Hamilton County School bus driver.

Her husband, James Willard Upchurch Sr., preceded her in death.

Matt Veazey

Matthew Alexander Veazey, 21, of Signal Mountain, died at a local hospital Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008.

He attended CSAS, the Center for Creative Arts and graduated from Peninsula High School in Knoxville in 2004. Matt was a student at Chattanooga State and had many friends and classmates who will miss him greatly. He was kind hearted, a loyal friend and a precious son, brother, nephew and cousin.

Matt was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Raymond Jones; maternal grandmother, Frances Walters; and paternal grandparents, Charles and Kathryn Veazey.

Survivors include his parents, Kelley and Bill Veazey, of Signal Mountain; brother, David (Lena) Veazey, of Knoxville; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and his great-aunt, Leona Ellington.

Ralph Elbert Wilson, 53, of Hixson, passed away Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, in a local hospital.

Ralph was of the Baptist faith and a commercial fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Martha Wilson, and his son, Ed Wilson.

Survivors include his daughters, Mandy and Brandy Wilson, of Rome, Ga.; stepchildren, Chris, Casandra and Tori; sisters, Shirley (Billy) Peppers, of Hixson, and Charlotte (Nelson) Dykes, of Tracy City; along with one grandchild.

Delores Elaine Zuk, 54, of Sale Creek, Tenn., passed away Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008.

TENNESSEE

Kenneth Andrews

CLEVELAND — Kenneth Leroy Andrews, 83, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, after a brief illness.

A native of Fulton, N.Y., he was the son of the late Charles Edward Andrews and Thelma Leroy Andrews. He also was preceded in death by his brother, Leigh Edward Andrews, of Sarasota, Fla., and his sister, Jean Andrews Brown, of Ogdensburg, N.Y.

Ken graduated from Fulton High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1946 on the Battleship Iowa. He was aboard the Iowa when it took President Franklin Roosevelt to the 1943 Yalta Conference with Churchill and Stalin. He was also present in Tokyo Bay at the signing of the Armistice with Japan in 1945. After the war he became a textile designer and worked in the woolen industry in New York, Massachusetts, Virginia and Georgia. He studied woolen textile design and finishing at Lowell (Mass.) Evening Textile School and by correspondence.

In 1964 he moved with his family to Cleveland, where he worked for Burlington Industries until 1974 when the plant closed. Ken loved to learn. When Cleveland State Community College opened in 1967, he enrolled and attended classes in their evening program for six years, earning an associates degree in secondary education. Over the years he took all available classes at Cleveland State in home and commercial plumbing and electricity, small motor repair, auto tune-up and blueprint reading, while working in home and building maintenance for several employers in Cleveland and Chattanooga. In 1986, at the age of 60, he enrolled in Chattanooga State Technical Community College as a full-time vocational student in refrigeration and air conditioning and received an associates degree. After working for several years in the plumbing business, he retired at the age of 65. Ken loved people. He and his wife Shirley, who were married 60 years, traveled extensively during retirement. He was a member of Cleveland First Baptist Church and a faithful member of the Koinonia Sunday School Class. He also directed the church’s senior adult activities for several years. He was an active member of AARP, American Legion and several other civic clubs. He acted in several plays with Cleveland’s little theatre group. He and Shirley were also members of the Calico Squares Dance Club for 24 years. He spent 13 years of his retirement doing public service work with the Cleveland Volunteer Police. There he met Robert Derrick who became his close friend. He was also an avid reader and golfer.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Chaffee Andrews; daughters, Teena (Randall) Ray, of Chattanooga, and Natalie (Frank) White, of Clarksville; son, David (Hilda) Andrews, of Morristown; grandchildren, Andrew (Danielia) White, of Clarksville and Bethany Andrews, of Nashville; stepgrandson, Eric (Rachel) Beck, of Bailey, Colo., and their four sons; and nephew, Jonathan Andrews, of St. Louis.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at 10 a.m. in the Community Room at Garden Plaza, 3500 Keith St., N.W., in Cleveland, with the Rev. Bill Griffith officiating.

The family will receive friends for an hour before the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cleveland First Baptist Church Generations building fund.

The body was cremated and interred privately.

Emma Byrd

EVENSVILLE — Emma E. Byrd, 93, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008.

Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home.

Interment will follow in Spring City Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Vaughn Funeral Home.

Carolyn Cox

MEMPHIS — Carolyn Cox, 84, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at her residence.

Mrs. Cox was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Van Cox.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Hicks, of Memphis; son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. David and Lindy Cox, of Chatsworth, Ga.; and grandsons, Jason Cox, Rock Spring, Ga., and Shea Hicks, of Memphis.

Funeral services will be held today, Oct. 10, 2008, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Forest Hill Funeral Home in Memphis with the Rev. Paul Schierer and the Rev. David Cox officiating.

Interment will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.

James Autry

METTER — James Edison Autry, 61, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008.

He loved to fishing, visiting friends, singing and was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Autry was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Naomi Autry; seven siblings, Melvin, Mildred, Coney Mack, Vernon, Harold, Joel and Leon Autry; special sister-in-law, Ann Autry; special brother-in-law, Don Mullis.

Survivors include his sister, Laura Smith; nieces, Starla, Connie and Lisa; aunts, Aileen Cameron and Sarah Clark; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. EDT Saturday at Hawkins Cemetery with the Rev. Fred Bradford officiating.

Visitation will be from noon until 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

RISING FAWN — Lisa Castleberry, 41, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008.

She was employed by McDonalds of Trenton.

She is survived by husband, Randall Castleberry, of Rising Fawn; two sons, Sammy Fowler, of Lookout Mountain, Ga., and Heath Fowler, of Lookout Mountain, Ga.; one stepson, Anthony Castleberry, of Rising Fawn; stepdaughter, Starla Hodge, of Dayton, Tenn.; mother and stepfather, Shirley and Vick Long, of Rising Fawn; father, Jesse Hopkins, of Dunlap, Tenn.; one sister, Laura Rigsby, of Dunlap; three stepbrothers, Ken, John and Don Long, all of Rising Fawn; and one stepsister, Becky Long, of Rising Fawn.

Exie Quinton

DALTON — Exie Capehart Quinton, 95, formerly of Dalton, passed away Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, at Parkside at Hutcheson in Rossville.

She was the daughter of the late, Carlus and Mary Willis Capehart and was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Quinton; daughter, Faye Cochran; sisters, Juanita, Sudie, Edith and Hazel; and brothers, James W., Edward and Virgil.

Exie is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Sharon Quinton, of Rocky Face; daughter and son-in-law, Geneva and Robert “Bob” Green, of Ringgold; half sister, Martha Gravitt of Dalton; stepsister, Helen Dycus, of Dalton; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Sunday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Love Funeral Home with Susan L. Harper, Chaplain of Hutcheson Medical Center officiating.

Burial will follow in West Hill Cemetery.

James Kamenik

STEVENSON — James Kamenik at the age of 64 went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2008.

Jim was born in Cleveland Ohio, on May 1, 1944, and was the son of the late Ladislav Josef and B. Jean Henderson Kamenik.

After graduating from Jefferson High School, he attended Ohio State University on a partial scholarship to play on their hockey team. He stayed in touch with several of his teammates. Jim spent the majority of his career in some form of the printing business.

The last three-four years have been the happiest of Jim’s life, while working and living in the Stevenson area. Larry and Faye Glass and their family were like a second family to Jim. It was through them and their unwavering acceptance he was able to overcome his lifelong battle with prescription pain killers and alcohol. He opened his heart and accepted Jesus into his life and was baptized August 2008. He was faithful to church attendance at Wannville Baptist Church. Even at death Jim was generous by being an organ donor. He was able go give the gift of sight by donating his corneas to the Alabama eye bank

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and both sets of grandparents.

He is survived by his brother, Richard Kamenik; sister, Nancy (John Sr.) Dyrcz; and niece and nephew, Jennifer and John Jr. Dyrcz. Jim also is survived by the entire Larry and Faye Glass family and his very beloved Alabama family.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. CDT until 2 p.m. CDT and the funeral service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. CDT from the Rudder Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Larry Glass will officiate. Anyone with a fond or humerous memory are welcome to share it at the service.

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Kamenik family to help with funeral arrangements or memorials can be made to Wannville Baptist Church.

FYFEE — Roy O’Shields, 78, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, at his residence.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. CDT Saturday, Oct. 11, from Rainsville Funeral Home.

Erika Duffield

BATON ROUGE, La. — Erika Christa Fuchs Duffield passed away in Baton Rouge on Monday, Oct. 6, 2008.

She was born in Guben, Germany on Aug. 24, 1937, to Maria Magdalena Schutze and Thomas Fuchs. She came to New York with her mother in 1954 and remained in the United States where she proceeded to raise her family. She moved to Baton Rouge in 1975. She was active in the LSU Campus Club, various school PTA organizations, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and in the Kenilworth Civic Association. She divided her time between Germany and the United States throughout her life. She enjoyed playing bridge, completing crossword puzzles in German, gardening, baking and cooking. She owned and operated the Bavarian Inn restaurant near LSU from 1980 to 1985. She recently enjoyed a family trip to Disney World, which exemplified her love for travel and spending time with her children, grandchildren and husband.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 42 years, Dr. Dennis Duffield; her daughter, Christine Richardson, son-in-law, J. Patrick Richardson, and grandchildren, Alexandria and Taylor Richardson, of Ooltewah; her daughter, Dr. Deborah Duffield, of Harrison; and her son, Dr. Derrick Duffield, daughter-in-law, Deborah Lynn Duffield, and grandchildren, David, Danielle and Dylan Duffield, of Petal, Miss. A sister and multiple nephews and nieces in Germany survive her, as well.

Religious services conducted by the Rev. Ben Bahr at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 10925 Florida Blvd, Baton Rouge.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East chapel, 11000 Florida Blvd., Baton Rouge.
