Chattanooga: Early TD wins for Pirates

Staff Photo by D. Patrick Harding South Pittsburg's David Jones (2) finds an opening in the Boyd-Buchanan defense and runs downfield for a touchdown during the first quarter.

SOUTH PITTSBURG, Tenn. — For most of the last two high school football seasons, South Pittsburg’s offense has had its way with every opponent. But Friday night it was the defense that allowed the state’s top-ranked Class 1A team to earn a 7-6 nonregion win over Boyd-Buchanan.

“In my 14 years of coaching, that’s the best defensive game I’ve ever been a part of,” Pirates defensive coordinator Allen Pratt said.

The win was the 22nd straight for South Pittsburg, a school record, and that streak was kept alive for the second time in three weeks in the last minute of a game.

By the time the game ended, both team’s coaches were furious about costly late penalties. South Pittsburg (7-0) had a 90-yard touchdown run called back with just over three minutes remaining, and Boyd-Buchanan (6-1) appeared to recover an onside kick with 31 seconds left but was ruled to have touched the ball just before it went the required 10 yards.

“I never would have thought this game would have turned into such a defensive battle,” said South Pittsburg running back David Jones, who finished with 19 carries for 102 yards and his team’s only touchdown. “Boyd’s line is tremendous. That was the hardest 100 yards I’ve ever gained.”

On the second play of the game, Jones broke a tackle near the line and darted 53 yards for his score.

From that point, neither team’s defense budged for much of the game. Both offenses came in averaging more than 340 total yards, but South Pittsburg was held to 39 yards and one first down in the second half.

Boyd-Buchanan, ranked fifth in Class 2A, managed 102 second-half yards, 70 of which came on a nine-play scoring drive capped by Nic Hughes’ 7-yard TD pass to Taylor Shull with 31 seconds remaining.

The Buccaneers opted to try for the two-point conversion, even after a 15-yard penalty for too many men on the field. Hughes passed to Clint Babb at the 2, but South Pittsburg’s Malcolm Jones stopped him short of the conversion.

“That was our fault as a staff,” Bucs coach Grant Reynolds said. “We didn’t get the right personnel on the field and got the penalty.

“I told our kids that that was the greatest defensive effort I’ve been a part of at Boyd-Buchanan. Unfortunately, their defense was awfully good too.”

South Pittsburg started its first four second-half possessions inside Boyd-Buchanan’s 44-yard line but was held on downs on each.

“That’s as frustrated as I’ve ever been trying to call plays,” Pirates coach Vic Grider said. “I honestly don’t remember the last time our offense got throttled like that. Boyd never backed off. We had opportunities in the first half and good field position for a lot of the second half, but they just shut us down.”
