Two additional components of “The Artist as Contemporary Alchemist” go on display Tuesday in the Cress Gallery at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Jade Townsend’s “Born Between” and Sarah Wagner’s “Nuclear Family” are sculptural installations that explore themes that are both timely and filled with much content, said Ruth Grover, curator of Cress Gallery.
“Townsend’s installation addresses greed, working against each other in the pursuit of wealth and the perception of wealth as a substitute for well-being,” she said.
Ms. Wagner uses the images of four deer to represent a “nuclear family” and explore relationships between a father, mother, brother and sister. She has created armatures for the deer from laminated matboard, swathed them in silk organza and suspended them from the ceiling.
“With the addition of special lighting, the visual effect is stunning, beautiful and haunting,” said Ms. Grover.
Both artists will be brought to Chattanooga by the John & Diane Marek Visiting Artist Series. Mr. Townsend and Ms. Wagner will speak about their work at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Room 356 of the Fine Arts Center. A reception will follow.
“The Artist as Alchemist” will continue through Nov. 26.
Cress Gallery, corner of Vine and Palmetto streets, is open 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday and Wednesday and 9:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. For information, call 425-4600.
