1013 web prep caps and schedule

Friday, Oct. 17

FARRAGUT ADMIRALS (7-0, 4-0) at OOLTEWAH OWLS (5-1, 4-0)

The kickoff: 7:30

Coaches, career numbers: Farragut’s Eddie Courtney (90-56); Ooltewah’s Benny Monroe (244-62)

Interesting stats: In the last five seasons, Farragut has a 4-1 record against the Owls, Ooltewah last winning 30-28 in 2006. The last two regular season games, including an 85-point shootout last year, have been decided by a total of five points. Farragut won that shootout last year, 44-41. Ooltewah is seeking its ninth postseason appearance in the last 10 seasons.

What to watch: It should be interesting to see how the Admirals, led by running back D’Andre Purty, fare with their vaunted running game against a very stout Ooltewah defense. Ooltewah is giving up just 7.3 points per game while Farragut averages 39 points per game, scoring 38 or better in five of their wins.

RHEA COUNTY GOLDEN EAGLES (6-1, 4-0) at RED BANK LIONS (5-2, 4-0)

The kickoff: 7:30

Coaches, career numbers: Rhea County’s Jason Fitzgerald (54-33); Red Bank’s Tim Daniels (119-55)

Interesting stats: Red Bank has won five in a row over the Golden Eagles, whose last victory was 34-6 in 2002. It is the start of a big two weeks for Rhea, which plays on the road against the Lions this week and then at Cleveland next week. The two games will decide whether the Golden Eagles win the region or even secure a home game for the first round of the playoffs. Red Bank hasn’t lost a region game since falling 10-7 to Hixson in 2004. Kelvin Clay became the Lions’ first 100-yard game receiver in their 20-19 win over Cleveland. He had 10 catches for 107 yards with one TD.

What to watch: If the Andy Christopher-to-Clay passing combination continues to click, it will invigorate a Red Bank running game that has been opponents’ primary focus through their first seven games. Red Bank has at least three quality runners including Tim Dews, who scored the winning TD against Cleveland as time expired. Rhea has been balanced offensively, using quarterback Cameron Tallent and backs Jacob Moffett, Jacob Swafford, A.J. Brown and Justin Rice.

SODDY-DAISY TROJANS (6-1, 4-0) at OAK RIDGE WILDCATS (4-3, 3-1)

The kickoff: 7:30

Coaches, career numbers: Soddy-Daisy’s E.K. Slaughter (6-1); Oak Ridge’s Stanton Stevens (92-27)

Interesting stats: The Trojans haven’t come within three touchdowns of matching the Wildcats in any of the last three games and the Trojans haven’t bested Oak Ridge since 2001 (28-21) when Glen Ryan was in his third season. Oak Ridge lost 24-21 to McMinn County, a team Soddy-Daisy bested 21-10 last year. The winner of this one has likely secured a playoff berth. The Trojans were victimized last week by two returns – one on a punt and one on a kickoff – but to their good fortune each was nullified by a penalty flag.

What to watch: Oak Ridge has the speed outside, in the backfield and in the secondary along with the power up front to match up nicely with the Trojans. Figure Oak Ridge will come after Soddy-Daisy quarterback Scott Parrott while trying to keep his favorite receivers, Donovan Barnes and Bubba Haney, from getting behind their secondary. Running back P.J. Hubbard continues to emerge as an offensive force for the Trojans, and he has taken some of the heat off the passing game.

CLEVELAND BLUE RAIDERS (5-2, 3-1) at HIXSON WILDCATS (4-3, 2-2)

The kickoff: 7:30

Coaches, career numbers: Cleveland’s Danny Wilson (86-47); Hixson’s Houston White (27-35)

Interesting stats: Cleveland has won nine straight over the Wildcats, dating back to 1999. The Wildcats won in 1998, 26-21. In that nine-game stretch, the Blue Raiders have posted a pair of shutouts and held the Wildcats to 13 or fewer points seven times. Cleveland, which started 4-0, has lost two of its last three, while Hixson started 3-1 but also has lost two of its last three.

What to watch: Cleveland, which has three shutouts, will be facing an offense similar to its own with quarterback Zach McCarter anchoring the Wildcats’ spread offense. The differences are up front where the Blue Raiders are likely as fast but bigger and in the fact that Cleveland quarterback Tucker Tipton, a run-pass specialist like McCarter, has more talent at his disposal including running back Monte Scotton and versatile runner/receiver/passer Terrell Parks.

SILVERDALE BAPTIST SEAHAWKS (4-2, 2-1) at SOUTH PITTSBURG PIRATES (7-0, 4-0)

The kickoff: 8

Coaches, career numbers: Silverdale’s John Allen (57-37); South Pittsburg’s Vic Grider (120-28)

Interesting stats: South Pittsburg posted its school-record 22nd straight win Friday, pulling out a 7-6 victory over previously undefeated Boyd-Buchanan. Silverdale is seeking its second straight winning season. The Seahawks may be hard pressed for a win this week as the Pirates have outscored Region 3-1A opponents to date by 268-6 in four games.

What to watch: Running back David Jones has been the Pirates’ workhorse and their offense had led the way until last week when the defense stepped up in a big way to curtail Boyd-Buchanan runners Ben Beasley and Taylor Gilley. Silverdale also has relied on the running game, primarily from Aaron Sterzik and Edgar Montgomery, so quarterback Scott Paone may have to step it up with the Seahawks passing game.
