New USDA label now in effect

I was happy to see that the USDA’s new requirement of food labels is now in effect. From now on, grocery stores will have to begin marking packages of meat, nuts, produce and other items with the countries of origin. Nice.

So I went to Bi-Lo over the weekend to get some salmon, hoping that one label would say “Wild caught in U.S.A.” No such luck, but it did give the country of origin: Farm-raised in Chile. It also mentioned that dyes had been used to give it more color. I passed it by. But, I’m happy about this new labeling thing. Giving the consumer more information will certainly help the decision-making process when it comes to buying fresh products.
