Chattanooga: Lady Owls face Trojans
Ooltewah and Soddy-Daisy cruised to 5-0 victories over their semifinal opponents Tuesday in the District 6-AAA high school soccer tournament at Soddy-Daisy.
Ooltewah’s Lady Owls spent nearly the entire first half in possession of the ball in Central territory. After repeatedly misfiring from in close or having their shots smothered by keeper Dora Harper, they finally broke through with two goals in the last 12 minutes of the first half.
The Lady Trojans, who haven’t lost since their season opener — a 1-0 decision against Murfreesboro Riverdale at Soddy-Daisy — scored all of their goals against Red Bank in the first half.
Ooltewah (9-7-2) will play Soddy-Daisy (15-1-1) in Thursday’s final at Soddy-Daisy at 7 p.m. Soddy-Daisy beat the Lady Owls 5-0 during the regular season.
The Lady Trojans allowed four goals all season and no more than one in any match. Ooltewah’s point total Tuesday was its season high.
“We’ve struggled scoring at certain times,” Ooltewah coach Rick Adolph said. “We’ll have to do everything well. They’re very good. We’ll need to minimize their chances. It’s going to take a lot of effort. We’d take a few bobbles and bounces our way.”
n Ooltewah 5, Central 0: The Lady Purple Pounders’ effort on defense helped keep the match scoreless for the first two thirds of the first half. With few substitutes on the bench, they eventually wore down.
Kelsey Hermann scored on a sliding kick from a tough angle on the right side off an assist from Jessica Crum in the 28th minute. Kayla Hernandez put a ball into the left corner off a feed from Claire Ingalls four minutes later.
“They put numbers back and we couldn’t get a clear shot,” said Adolph, whose team totaled 25 shots with 15 coming in the first half. “Fortunately, we got a couple to go.”
Jennifer Fletcher set up Ingalls’ goal from deep on the left wing early in the second half. Hannah Squires added an unassisted goal and Bailey Ford scored on a penalty kick.
n Soddy-Daisy 5, Red Bank 0: Hannah Jenkins scored off Dakota Johnson’s corner kick 10 minutes into the match. By the time Katie Hillis scored unassisted near the six-minute mark of the half for her second goal, Soddy-Daisy had its total.
Melissa Downs and Emily Addison scored the other goals. Jenkins and Downs also had assists along with Elizabeth Geier.
“Our passing was definitely on the money,” Soddy-Daisy coach Moises Drumond said. “That’s important in keeping possession. We did that well.”
Drumond emptied his bench in the second half.
“We got to see our future,” he said.
Cleveland, McMinn in final
Cleveland defeated Walker Valley 6-0 on Tuesday and McMinn County earned a 1-0 win against Cumberland County to advance to the District 5-AAA final Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Cleveland Soccer Complex.
The top-seeded Lady Raiders got a hat trick from Emily Jones, and Hannah Ellis and Taylor Thomason added goals.
Taylor Van Wagner’s first-half goal on an assist from Abby Burke was the difference for the Lady Cherokees.
