Kaylan Dilts is following her brother from Grace Academy to Bryan College, where she has signed scholarship papers to play both volleyball and basketball.
Dilts has been all-state in both sports for Grace, which hosted Bryan coaches Leo Sayles and Jamy Bechler in a ceremony on her behalf Tuesday morning. She averaged 18.6 points and 8.5 rebounds a game last winter for Les Compton’s Lady Golden Eagles and just finished a volleyball career with 823 kills.
“She’s a very versatile player,” Grace volleyball coach Shana Ivarson said. “Her control and strength on the front row are her main assets, but I used her at every position.”
Said Compton: “We used her both inside and outside.”
Dilts, a shade over 6 feet tall, will be playing softball for the second year in a row this spring, but Bryan doesn’t have that sport.
“One of the main reasons I picked Bryan is because they offered me both basketball and volleyball. I love playing both sports,” she said. “And I like it because it’s a small school and my brother goes there and really loves it, and I’ve heard good things about both coaches.”
Jonathan Dilts is a junior on the men’s basketball team at the Dayton school.
Sayles said he expects an immediate contribution on the volleyball front row, where he is losing two seniors, “either in the middle or outside. We’ll give her a good look at both positions. Technique, she really fits well as an outside hitter, but she’s a solid blocker, too.”
Bechler said he knows he won’t get Dilts until after volleyball finishes its usual postseason run, so he’s counting on her more for depth than a big impact as a freshman.
“She can run and shoot, and she can post up and rebound,” Bechler said. “We can use her inside, but we like to be big on the perimeter too. We’ve love to use her there.”
