Election for the Soddy-Daisy Commission

Jim Adams (Incumbent)

* 73

* Lived in Soddy-Daisy for more than 65 years.

* Retired from DuPont Inc.

* “I think there’s a lot of potential here for a lot of growth in the next few years, and I’d like to be part of that to direct that growth.”

* Wants to attract new business (supermarket, restaurants, new industrial park) to capture tax revenue being spent outside the city and use additional funds to build a new City Hall/library; pave Daisy Dallas Road and convert the old Spurline Road to a bike trail and walking path.

* Management experience, knowledge of the commissioner position, a vision for where he would like the city to go: “A bedroom community with some light high-tech industry and some retail business with nice restaurants and department stores and additional recreational opportunities.”

* Charter chairman of the Soddy-Daisy Municipal Planning Commission, Water and Wastewater Treatment Board, member of the Water Quality Program in Hamilton County, member of the board of directors for the Hixson Civic Center, chairman of the board of trustees of the Soddy United Methodists.

Mark Bivens

* Knows the community well; knows what people want and need.

* Member of the Soddy Masonic Lodge, member of the Alhambra Shrine, active in the Kids Club.

Margaret H. Chastain

* Lived in Soddy-Daisy for 23 years.

* Retired from the Chattanooga Police Department.

* “I think that fresh ideas even from older citizens can bring some new life to a governing body.”

* Offer incentives to attract new business; create an entertainment venue for young people, such as a bowling alley or a dance hall; prepare a five-year plan for a full-time fire department; build a library with a computer lab.

* Attends the city commission meetings, experience as a supervisor and department head with the police department.

* Member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, active volunteer with the Chamber of Commerce activities.

Randy Dillon

Shane Harmon

* “I’m not telling you that we have bad people in office. I’m just sitting here and saying that I can do a better job.”

* Support a property tax break for senior citizens; prevent another tax hike; recruit new business; improve parks and recreation; pave roads.

* Business experience, attends the commission meetings, “90 percent (of politicians) have the right reason for starting but they tend to forget after a couple of years why they’re there … they’re there to help the people and I plan on not forgetting the people.”

Garland Johnson

* Owner, Johnson Stables; contract bus driver for Hamilton County school district.

* “I think that all avenues should be looked at before taxes are raised.”

* Keep taxes low; attract new business by starting another industrial park; bring in new restaurants.

* Knows a lot of people in the community. “I’m not afraid to work.”

* “The Declaration of Independence says that ‘We the People can alter and change government.’ But that doesn’t work because the government doesn’t listen to us. The old saying is ‘If you can’t beat them, join them.’ If I can join them, then maybe I can intimidate them enough to fix it.”

* Check on the city charter to ensure that everything is running correctly; ensure that a “real” flag will fly in the Soddy-Daisy courtroom (a flag without gold trim), cultivate corn that can be refined into ethanol to fuel city vehicles.

* Member of the U.S. Marine Corps. “I’m a leader, I’m also a thinker ... I don’t take no for an answer.”

Mitchell Meeks

* Lived in Soddy-Daisy for 41/2 years.

* Attorney

* “I feel that I’ve been so blessed that I believe that I have an obligation to give back to the community in some tangible way.”

* Make sure that, as Soddy-Daisy continues to grow, it grows “wisely and responsibly and not just in a haphazard way”; opposed to raising taxes unless “absolutely necessary.”

* Believes he can bring a unique legal perspective to the commission, loves working with people and solving problems.

* Big brother with Big Brothers and Big Sisters program in Chattanooga; trustee with Central Baptist Church in Hixson.

Hubert Geno Shipley (Incumbent)

* 53

* Lived in Soddy-Daisy for 53 years

* Owner, Shipley Plumbing Co.

* Continue some of the projects he’s involved with, including putting lights around Soddy Lake; build a playground for young children; build a baseball field for the Diaper League.

* Attract new business by building a new industrial park.

* Experience on the commission, voted against the tax increase, open-door policy with citizens.

* Member of the Soddy Masonic Lodge; member Alhambra Shrine

Patti Skates (Incumbent)

* 54

* Lived in Soddy-Daisy for 20 years

* Teacher at Red Bank High School

* “I see a future for this community and a growth plan, planned growth, that is.”

* Attract new businesses (especially franchise restaurants and retailers) to encourage spending in the community limits and to keep taxes low; build a library; target areas for annexation; work on infrastructure; start preparing for a paid fire department.

* Helped bring new business into the city (e.g. Wal-Mart), active on the Tennessee Valley Authority-sponsored commission to attract more business, worked to get Hamilton County to sign Soddy-Daisy City Hall over to the city, open-minded and listens to what people want.

* Member of the Soddy-Daisy Firefighters Association, the Hamilton County Education Association, Municipal Technical Advisory Service, Tennessee Municipal League, Chattanooga Chapter of Freedoms Foundation.

Election Day

Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday across Hamilton County.
