Political blog: Democratic coronation quite a party

“Jilted, jilted. I'm a flower whose wilted ...” sings Diana Devereux in George Gershwin's election musical “Of Thee I Sing.” Hillary was jilted by her DNC suitor this time around but she is waiting in the wings for 2012; “poison the apple, my pretty!” (“Wizard of Oz”) — I try to credit my quotes since Joe Biden is on the Democratic ticket.

Of course, in “Of Thee I Sing,” Diana was one of a multitude of girlfriends of the presidential dominee. Diana was sort of a Monica figure who pretended to be “with child” to try to force the Presidential nominee, Wintergreen, to marry her. Let me correct the analogy-more like the John Edwards' situation except this time there is a baby whose parentage is in question. Life emulates art — art emulates life! What a prophet George Gershwin was! And what a VP choice was old Throttlebottom who accepted on the condition that no one told Momma Throttlebottom.

I just watched Lord Obama, Imperator Maximus Augustus, accept the Democratic Nomination. I love Greek tragedies. No liberal Democrat (or at least no admittedly Liberal Democrat) since LBJ has won election for president. Carter and Clinton were Southerners who at least pretended to be sort of conservative. Obama won't go down because of race, or not picking Hillary, or because of questions about his religious history. He will be defeated because he is avowedly liberal. Lots of promises, but how is he going to pay for it? Reducing (allegedly) taxes on 95% and laying more burden on the other 5 percent? A trillion dollars more of promises in a time when our nation has been spending out of control for 50 years.

Nationalized Health Care which hasn't worked anywhere else it has been tried. Dems criticized Republican Congresses for excess spending and then say we haven't spent enough. The logic escapes me. Fifty percent of the people pay 94 percent-plus of the income taxes. It is bad policy to keep shifting more and more of the burden of government to fewer and fewer people — folks just don't tolerate being plundered and pillaged again and again. It destabilizes the social fabric of our nation and the Republic. Wasn't it a 3 percent Tea Tax that set off the American Revolution? Spending is the crack cocaine of politics and both sides are addicted and need serious rehab.
