The AIM Center has received a $100,000 appropriations grant from the state to establish a wellness center, according to a Friday news release.
The center is scheduled for completion by November. It will provide resources intended to increase the average life expectancy of people with mental illness, which, at 53, is 25 years less than that of the general population, the release said.
The AIM Center, now located at a newly renovated facility at 472 W. M.L. King Blvd., provides psychiatric rehabilitation services to aid in recovery and improve quality of life for those diagnosed with any mental health condition.
Physical and mental wellness are key to recovery from mental illness, and the wellness center’s activities will help participants deal with health issues such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes, lung disease and substance abuse, according to the center.
State Sen. Andy Berke, D-Chattanooga, and Rep. JoAnne Favors, D-Chattanooga, secured the grant for the AIM Center, the release said. The legislators will present a check to the center’s board of directors at the AIM Center’s annual board meeting on Monday.
