Chattanooga: VW chief sees automaker meeting targets

Volkswagen AG should meet its targets in 2008 and still post volume growth in the next year but market conditions could deteriorate in 2009, Chief Executive Officer Martin Winterkorn told Reuters on Monday.

"The economic feelers we have extended predict critical times ahead," he said on the sidelines of the media launch of the new Golf VI hatchback, which hits European dealerships in October.

Mr. Winterkorn added he was eyeing the manufacture of premium Audi vehicles in its planned U.S. production site in Chattanooga, excluding for now any idea of a new separate plant.

"Audi will also need a production base in the USA if the currency exchange rates remain where they are," he said.
