Cumberland County: Trial in slaying of nurse, child moved

CROSSVILLE, Tenn. — Huston Foley Lloyd’s trial in the 2006 killings of a prison nurse and her daughter has been delayed and moved out of Cumberland County, court officials said.

Mr. Lloyd, 50, of Kingston Springs, Tenn., is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and felony murder in the June 3, 2006, slayings of Kimberly Wyatt, 27, and her daughter Sarah, 4, in a church parking lot, records show.

The venue was moved to Putnam County because of construction at the Cumberland County Justice Center and because of media coverage, court officials said.

“They are adding on to the Justice Center,” said Dawn Ashburn, a deputy clerk in the Cumberland Circuit Court Clerk’s office. She said construction noise interfered with another recent trial and led to the change of venue.

WHAT’S NEXT

Huston Foley Lloyd’s murder trail trial has been moved from Cumberland to Putnam County and rescheduled from October to December.

A defense motion was granted last month to continue the case, court officials said.

Mr. Lloyd’s lawyer, Jack Lowery Jr., was working out of town Monday. Jack Lowery Sr., of the same firm, said part of the reason for the delay is that a key witness must testify in another trial on same dates the trial was last set.

“Right now, it looks like we’ve got a December date and everybody’s working toward trying to make that happen,” Mr. Lowery said.

Prosecutors have said they’ll seek the death penalty if Mr. Lloyd is convicted.

Assistant District Attorney Gary McKenzie said the change of venue and date pose no problems for the prosecution.

“The state’s looking forward to trying this case,” Mr. McKenzie said. “We’re ready and prepared and have been for some time.”

Mr. Lloyd also is charged with aggravated assault against Alexander Bosland, the lone witness in a 2006 preliminary hearing in General Sessions Court.

Mr. Bosland, who worked with Ms. Wyatt at the Southeastern Tennessee State Regional Correctional Facility in Bledsoe County, testified that he met Ms. Wyatt’s car on the day of the shootings and followed her to a church parking lot.

Mr. Lloyd was there in a separate vehicle, Mr. Bosland testified.

Ms. Wyatt put her 6-year-old daughter, Karon, into Mr. Bosland’s truck then turned back to get Sarah, Mr. Bosland testified. He said Mr. Lloyd shot the little girl in the neck from less than three feet away. He then shot Ms. Wyatt numerous times, firing a final shot to her head after dragging her from under Mr. Bosland’s truck, he testified.

Mr. Lloyd has been in jail since his arrest, officials said.
