Ray Anderson Jr.

Ray Anderson Jr., 83, a resident of Hamilton County, passed away Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at a local hospital.

Mr. Anderson was a 1943 graduate of Chattanooga High School and a certified public accountant who practiced in Tennessee for 50 years.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Ray Sr. and Lois Anderson; his wife, Aileen Anderson and his wife, Betty Jordan Anderson; brother, Fred Anderson of Chattanooga.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Deborah Anderson, of Cleveland, Tenn.; stepson, Dennis Jordan, of Cleveland, Tenn.; stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Lori and Monty Miller, of Hawaii; brother, Charles Hill Anderson, of South Carolina.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Dr. F.J. May officiating.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 1 p.m. until the time of the service on Thursday Sept. 18, at the North Chapel.

Luther Baughn Jr.

Luther C. Baughn Jr., 84, of Chattanooga, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, in a local hospital.

Mr. Baughn worked for American Lava Corp. and 3-M Corp. for 41 years, having spent 25 of those year in South Carolina. While in South Carolina, Mr. Baughn served as a Magistrate Judge for five years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving with the Tank Battalion in the European Theatre under Gen. George Patton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Bonnie Mae Pearson Baughn; and his adoptive parents, John G. and Grace D. Baughn.

He is survived by his wife, Nina Gossett Baughn; children, Pauline Holbrook Kelly, Fort Oglethorpe, Terry Baughn, Gray Court, S.C. and Robert L. “Bobby” Baughn, Durham, N.C.; sister, Margaret Slatton, Chattanooga; four grandsons, Donnie Holbrook, Greg Holbrook, both of Chattanooga, Steve Holbrook, Kennesaw, Ga., and John Baughn, Sumter, S.C.; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. in the chapel with the Rev. Everett Gossett and Steven Holbrook officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery with Tony Gossett, Perry Gossett, Donnie Holbrook, Greg Holbrook, Steven Holbrook, Tim Gossett and Allen Gossett serving as pallbearers.

Lettie Chauncey

Lettie Chauncey, 86, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008.

Mrs. Chauncey was a member of Soddy Church of God. She retired from Miller Brothers Department Store.

Her parents, Calvin Posey and Lucy Lee; sister, Elizabeth Lewis; brothers, Garrett, Carl, Glenn, Harry and Buck Posey; and a son-in-law, Don Gardier, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, William McKinley Chauncey; children, Pat (Rex) Smith, Dot Gardier, Sandra Berthold, Charlie (Sherry) Chauncey, Pam Chauncey; grandchildren, Darlene (Eddie) Case, Lisa (Michael) Virusso, Regina (Brian) Schwenk, Chuck (Jeri) Chauncey, Jason (Rebecca) Chauncey; great-grandchildren, Brandon and Brooke Case, Alexander and Emily Rose, Jordan Schwenk; and a special family friend, Barbara McEliece.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home with Dr. Edward Williams and the Rev. Marshall Roberson officiating.

Interment will follow in Varner Cemetery.

Cheryl Lee Shipp Culver, 66, of East Ridge, passed away Friday, Sept. 12, 2008.

A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, she was a former employee of Burner Systems International, where she worked for 38 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Ruby McNish Shipp.

She is survived by her son, Ray Culver, of East Ridge; two sisters, Anna Weathers and Bessie Miller, both of Chattanooga; brother, Mike Shipp, of Ringgold, Ga.; and two grandchildren, Heather Shipley and Nakota Culver, both of Chattanooga.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Greenwood Cemetery.

Thelma J. Gibbons, of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, in a local health facility.

Ron Gilchrist

Carl Ronald “Ron” Gilchrist, 56, of Chattanooga, died suddenly on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008.

Ron was deeply loved and respected, and will be greatly missed by family and beloved friends. He loved spending time with his family and friends outdoors and on the water. He loved taking care of everyone around him. Ron was a devoted husband, father, son and friend, and was a faithful and active member of Hickory Valley Christian Church.

Ron was the president of Gilchrist Plumbing & Electrical Co., Inc. He received his bachelor of science degree in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State University and his masters of business administration from Duke University.

He was preceded in death by his father, Capt. Carl Gilchrist; and father-in-law, Dr. James Phillips.

Survivors include his wife, Elise Gilchrist, of Chattanooga; mother, Betty Gilchrist, of Fayetteville, N.C.; son, Dr. Kevin Gilchrist, of Raleigh, N.C.; daughters, Megan (Brad) McGinity, of Chapel Hill, N.C., Diane (Colby) Laughter and Kelly Johnson, of Chattanooga; brother, Maj. Michael (Jane) Gilchrist and their children, William and Elizabeth, of Raleigh, N.C.; sister, Debbie Kennedy and her children, Ashley and Jonathan, of Fayetteville, N.C.; mother-in-law, Jane Phillips; brothers-in-law, Phil (Cinci) Phillips and James (Alison) Phillips and their families.

A private family graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. today, Sept. 17, 2008, at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Minister Dale Lovelady and Dr. Rodney Susong officiating.

Interment will be in Hamilton Memorial gardens.

A celebration of Ron’s life will be held at Hickory Valley Christian Church located on Shallowford Road at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008.

Monica Hartline

Monica Desha Hartline, 44, of Ooltewah, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at her home.

Mrs. Hartline was born in Calhoun, Ga., to Jack and Brigitta Desha. She was employed at Memorial Hospital as a unit secretary/monitor tech. and was a very avid reader.

She is survived by her husband, Chuck Hartline; son, Alex Hartline; mother, Kitty Waters; brother, John Desha; mother and father-in-law, Charles and Benita Hartline Sr.; sister-in-law, Allison, and her husband, Tom Jordan Jr.; nephew, Evan Jordan; niece, Emeree Jordan; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday at Wauhatchie United Methodist Church, 3401 Cummings Highway, Chattanooga, TN 37419.

Memorial services will follow at 6 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Mike Shearon, Dr. Steven Galyon, and Aubrey Wood officiating.

Joan Jenkins

Joan Marie Cowell Jenkins, 79, of Lookout Mountain, passed away, Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, surrounded by her loved ones and family at her home.

She was born in Ithica, N.Y. on August 1, 1929. She graduated from Bright School, G.P.S., UTC and received her masters in Guidance and Counseling Monte Verde Academy, Monte Verde, Fla. She was a teacher of dance and P.ED at G.P.S. Joan was an avid snook fisherwoman in the Everglades and a duck and dove huntress. She was lifetime member of the Chattanooga County Club. She also loved to golf, paint oil landscapes of the Everglades and swam like “Esther Williams”. She loved to play hymns on the piano and was always smiling and was a member of Pilgrims Congregational Church in Chattanooga.

She was preceded by her parents, Dr. Edward Cowell, Dorothy Cowell Hutchins Smith and W. Corry Smith Sr.; her husband, Thomas E. Jenkins Sr. and her brothers, W. Corry Smith Jr. and David Hutchins Cowell.

She is survived by her children, Debra Henry Schwind Davoulas and Sidney Hutchins Henry; stepchildren, Thomas E. Jenkins, Jr., Jerald Jenkins, Janet Cate and Jennifer Allison; grandchildren, Ian Schwind, David Schwind, Heather Henry Kinsey, Matthew Stephen St. Clair, and Lacey Henry; great-grandchild, Dylan Schwind; and a cousin, Miss Marion Hutchins Davis.

Funeral services will be conducted from Pilgrim Congregational Church at 400 Glenwood Drive in Chattanooga, at 1 p.m. EDT Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, with Pastor Dave Brown officiating.

Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens, in Hixson.

The family will receive friends from 3:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. EDT today at the church.

Jerry Lien

Jerry Dick Lien passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, in Chattanooga.

She was born Oct. 28, 1950 near Minneapolis, Minn.

He was the son of Dr. and Mrs. Jerry M. Lien of Ooltewah.

His mother, Claire Grimstad Lien preceded him in death.

He was a member of Collegedale Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Jerry received a B.A. in English from Walla Walla College in Washington state and an M.A. in English Studies from Loma Linda University in California. For many years he was associated with the Tennessee Department of Human Services in Juvenile Protection. He later served as Adjunct Professor of English at Cleveland State College, Southern Adventist University and Chattanooga State. He also was an Adjunct Professor of Humanities at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at Collegedale Memorial Park.

Billie Mansfield

Billie Fisher Mansfield, 86, of Duluth, Ga., passed away Monday, Sept. 15, 2008.

She was raised by her sisters after her mother died when she was two years old. She went to Rhea County High School and then to Tennessee Tech. after which she taught school in Rhea County until the birth of her son, George. She accompanied her husband Mr. Mansfield on his business trips and always supported him throughout his career when she lived in St. Louis, Waterloo, Iowa, and Orlando, Fla. Afterwards she moved to Sandy Springs, Ga., where she was a substitute teacher, and a Boy Scout Den Mother. She was in the Woman’s Auxiliary, in football and baseball. She was very active with the Methodist Church all of her life. The family nicknamed her “Mouth of the South” and had friends all over the country. She loved to garden, bird watch, cook, and take care of her family.

She was an avid reader and loved life. After you met Mrs. Mansfield “Billie” you would never forget her.

She is survived by her husband, Horace D. Mansfield; son, George Mansfield; and granddaughter, Michelle Mansfield.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Malone Dodson officiating.

Interment will follow the service in Buttram Cemetery.

Family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of service Friday at the funeral home.

Juanita Oliver

Juanita Oliver, 76, of Hixson, passed away Monday, Sept. 15, 2008.

She was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and taught the Children’s Sunday School class while in the Air Force. Juanita was of the Baptist faith, loved music and enjoyed singing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Sally Oliver; sister, Inez Moore.

Juanita is survived by her sisters, Clara Oswalt, Hixson and Mary Huskey, Harrison; brothers, Frank (Peggy) Oliver, Flat Rock, Ala. and Herman Oliver, Hixson; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the North Chapel.

James Prelog Sr.

James E. Prelog Sr., 91, of Chattanooga, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, in a local health care facility.

A native of Youngstown, Ohio, he had lived in Arizona for 23 years before moving to Chattanooga seven years ago. He was of the Catholic faith and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a life member of the ACC Club in Youngstown, Ohio, was an active member in the Poland, Ohio, American Legion where he served as Vice Commander, was active with the VFW and the Teamsters Union.

He was the son of the late Michael and Pauline Martan Prelog and was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel and his second wife, Rita; longtime companion, Ann Tom; and also 10 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include four daughters and their husbands, Helen and Ed Bridges, Hixson, Marjorie Benson, Akron, Ohio, Juanita and Bill Barber and Rosemary and Mike Carson, all of Girard, Ohio; three sons and their wives, James E. and Brenda Prelog Jr., Hagerstown, Md., John and Carol Prelog, Poland, Ohio, and Michael and Mary Prelog, Louisville, Ky.; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; sister, Ann Kerr, Iuka, Miss.; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in National Cemetery.

Karen Sherman

Karen Williams Sherman, 53, of Ringgold, Ga., passed away on Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, at a local hospital.

She was born April 8, 1955, and was a longtime resident of the East Ridge area. She worked at Battlefield Imaging as a Radiologic Technologist. At her passing she was surrounded by those she loved the most: her husband, children, sister and two brothers. Karen had a true love for her family and friends. She was a passionate sports fan, playing multiple sports in her youth and later enjoyed watching her family as they competed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Virginia and Bill Williams; grandparents, Lillie Belle and Harold Brock and Ida Belle and W.F. Williams.

Survivors include her husband, Garland “Gary” Sherman; two children, Ashley and Ryan; twin sister, Sharon Williams Speiser (Terry Speiser); brothers, Chris Williams (Margo Williams) and Scott Williams (Dee Williams); nieces, Whitney Williams Fessler (Mike Fessler), Holly Speiser Collett (David Collett), Lindsay Williams McGill (Seth McGill), Katie Speiser, Angel Mullins (John Mullins) and Ciara Ditmore; nephews, Josh (Holly) and Zachary Williams; one uncle; two cousins; three great-nephews; and the beloved family pet, Buffy.

He was employed at Vulcan Materials for 37 years and was a member of Operating Engineers Union Local 917B. Pete was a mason.

A lifelong resident of Rhea County. He was a member of Graysville Seventh-day Adventist Church and was retired from McKee Bakery.

He was preceded in death by parents, Victor and Edna Harmon; three sisters, Jean and Linda Harmon, Carolyn Hankins; two brothers, Bob and Ben Harmon.

Elaine Jones

RINGGOLD — Mary Elaine Rollins Jones, 86, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008.

A lifelong resident of Ringgold, she was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church for almost 60 years, where she taught Sunday School for more than half a century. Always active in her community, in recent years she worked in the Senior Volunteers program.

Daughter of the late Edd Rollins and Fannie McKeehan Rollins and widow of the late Carl W. Jones, and predeceased by her brother, Walter Edd Rollins and her sister, Mildred Rollins Brown.

She is survived by her daughter, Libby Hullender, of Chattanooga; sister, Virginia Denson, of Athens, Ga.; four grandchildren, Greg Hullender, Tony Hullender, Jennifer Hullender Holdaway and Alex Hullender; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, in the funeral home chapel.

Interment will follow at Smith’s Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 10 a.m. to noon and from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will follow in Estelle Cemetery. Lewis Crabtree, Brock Rackley, Marvin Chase, Marvin C. Chase, Michael Crabtree and Keith Chambers will serve as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers are Bobby Ball, Corey Chambers, Junior Sherill, Shane Mitchell, and all his closest friends.

The family will receive friends from noon-9 p.m. today, all day Thursday and prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.
