One Tank Wonder: Mason-Mayfield Maze
It’s two mazes in one this year for McMinn County, combining the annual corn mazes of the Gary Mason farm near Niota and the Mayfield family farm.
Hours: 9 a.m. to 9 .m. Friday; 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday; 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday through Oct. 31. Special reservations can be made weekday except Wednesdays.
Admission: $8 per person for maze, dairy parlor tour, animal barn and hay ride, $6 per person on school groups with reservations. Children 4 and under free.
Distance: 63 miles from Chattanooga.
Estimated fuel cost: $20 round trip.
What’s worthwhile: Two mazes, 2 acres and 8 acres. Store, refreshments, antique tools, education area, information about the dairy and farm, vegetable and fruit farm, Mayfield treats, a huge ear of corn made from yellow milk jugs and modern rest rooms. Concessions include hot dogs and hamburgers.
What you’ll need: Camera, bug spray, sunscreen, flashlight, and walkie talkie or cell phones to talk to family and friends.
For the kids: Milking demonstrations, dairy parlor tours, animated cows, animal barn, pumpkin chucking, corn, kiddie tractors, educational silo and hay rides.
Gas saving tip: Visit the Mayfield Dairy and Living Heritage Museum while in Athens.
Directions: Follow I-75 north to Exit 52, turn right and travel 3.2 miles on State Route 305. Turn left on County Road 378 (Tellico Avenue). Go 1.2 miles and turn left on State Route 307. Travel 3/4 mile to the entrance on your left.
From the farm to the Mayfield Dairy: Turn south on State Route 307 from the farm. Follow the route to the Mayfield Dairy and tour area.
