UTC blog: Two Gamecocks out, two in

While the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is dealing with a high volume of injuries throughout its line, it’s hardly alone when it comes to juggling its roster.

Jacksonville State coach Jack Crowe said Monday that junior defensive end Santez Mays, a starter, and freshman running back Calvin Middleton were suspended for Saturday’s game for violating team rules.

While those two are gone, Crowe said running back Tremayne Coger and kicker Gavin Hallford are back from injury. Coger, who spent two years as a cornerback at Alabama before transferring, has yet to play this season.

Daniel Jackson is the Gamecocks’ leading rusher with a total of 151 yards through two games — quarterback Ryan Perrilloux is second with 102 — and Crowe is hoping that with Coger’s return Jacksonville State’s running game will have a little thunder and lightning with the powerful Jackson and the speedy Coger.

“I think Tremayne will give us a speed element at running back and Daniel (Jackson) has been doing a good job,” Crowe said. “If all comes to fruition, they will be a good combination.”

On the Mocs’ injury front, wide receivers Blue Cooper (elbow) and Joel Bradford (knee) and linebacker Aaron Adams (foot) are out this week, and defensive tackle Nick Craig (foot) is doubtful.

Both wideout Clint Woods and safety Tony Swafford suffered concussions in the Florida State game and sat out Tuesday’s practice, however, both are listed as probable for Saturday.
