Delores Boynton

Delores Matthew Boynton, 68, of Chattanooga, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, at a local hospital.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward H. and Thelma Freeman Matthews.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Alexander Boynton Sr.; four sons, Edward A. (Brenda), of Pennsylvania, Alexander Jr. and Michael, of Chattanooga and Alexis (Anita), of Nashville; daughter, Marshall Ann Jones, of Atlanta; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Carrie M. Boynton; brothers, Dwight (Ash) Matthews and Edward Matthews Jr., of Chattanooga; three brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins, a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, at Greater Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. Reginald Poindexter officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Interment in National Cemetery at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22.

Eva Delius

Eva Delius, 89, of Soddy-Daisy, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008.

She was a native of Oakdale, Tenn., and had been a resident of the Chattanooga area since 1959. Eva was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James; and a great-granddaughter, Paige Shianne Clary.

Eva is survived by her two children, Lindell Delius and Sandra (Roger) Clary; five grandchildren, Kym (Wayne) Brown, James (Tara) Clary, Crystal Fowler, Lenny and Russell Delius; seven great-grandchildren, Holly (Shawn) Thomas, Jessy and Hooter Brown, Ethan Clary, Jacob Rose and Courtney Moses.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the North Chapel.

Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today and 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Billy Denham

Billy Perry Denham, of Austin, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008.

Billy was born in Chattanooga on Aug. 31, 1952. He was a graduate of Hixson High School, class of 1970 and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga earning a BS in business administration in 1973. He retired from Sears after 32 years of service and joined Marshalls in 2003 where he worked for the last five years. His great love of the Lord Jesus Christ was demonstrated in every aspect of his life. He served as a member of the Gideons for more than 20 years. Billy understood that a man’s greatness is not determined by who serves him but by whom he serves.

He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Mae Denham and father, Bill Denham.

Billy is remembered in the hearts of his loving wife of 36 years, Valerie Denham, of Austin, Texas; and sister, Debbie (Joel) Raines, of Soddy-Daisy; as well as his nieces, Amy Raines, of Soddy-Daisy and Tabitha (Christopher) Smith, of Hixson and their children, Michael, Matthew and Maleah as well as other family members and friends.

Memorial services will be held at Hixson First Baptist Church, 5800 Grubb Road, Hixson TN 37343, on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008 at 2 p.m. with Dr. John Boldt officiating.

Stella Dunlap

Stella Hargis Dunlap, of Signal Mountain, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, in a local hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 20, at Signal Mountain United Methodist Church, 3419 Taft Highway, Signal Mountain, with the Rev. J.N. Howard officiating.

James Everhart

James William Steelman Everhart, 75, a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, a devout Christian, a prominent businessman, civic leader and a friend to everyone he knew, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008.

He was at home with his devoted wife and children by his side. His parents were the late W.J. and Katharyn Guille Everhart. He was a graduate of Central High School and was founder and owner of Everhart Steel Construction for over 40 years. He was well known for building many structures in the city of Chattanooga and best known professionally for erecting the Sunsphere in Knoxville, for the 1982 World’s Fair and Expo.

Jim served over 10 years in the Tennessee National Guard, U.S. Army. Jim was involved in numerous civic and professional clubs and was an active member of Ridgedale Baptist Church. He was a charter member of Expressway Optimist Club; board of directors for City Farmers and Souls for Christ; board of directors for Jesters, Red Cross members, Jaycees and Shriners; Half Century Club; and Gideons International.

Jim is survived by his wife, Cheryl Everhart; son, Mitch (Deborah) Everhart; daughter, Michele (Bryan) Sharpe; stepdaughters, Jayne (Bryan) Preston; Jennifer Hoke; Julie (Joe) Romeo; grandchildren, Emily and Ansley Sharpe; Mia, Ryan and Abigail Preston; Joshua Hoke; Joseph, Nicholas, Ally and Sophie Romeo; sister, Rosalind (Basil) Savard; special cousin, Phyllis Henry and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; Hospice caregiver, Larry Johnson.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. at Ridgedale Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Owens officiating.

Interment will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the East Brainerd Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers will be members of the Promise Sunday School Class.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gideons, members of the Souls for Christ and close friends.

Aubrey Q. “Buddy” Green, 68, of Harrison, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, from a local hospital.

He joined New Bethel Baptist Church in 2007.

Funeral services will be held today, Sept. 20, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Rinks, the Rev. John Butler and Dr. James Hutchings officiating.

Rosa Harden, 91, of Birchwood, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2008.

Survivors: children: Susan Hall, Ricky Harden, Sandra Fogle, Doyle Harden, Donnie Harden, Mollie Denton and Terry Harden.

Services are 3 p.m. Sunday at Ralph Buckner Funeral Home.

Josephine Houston

Josephine Pollard Houston, 76, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, in an area hospital.

Mrs. Houston was a member of Soddy United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her son, Clyde Edwin Houston.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Douglas C. Houston, of Soddy-Daisy; sisters, Polly Levi, Katherine Sorrick, Phyllis Ball, Dorothy McAfee and Diane Overdear; favorite nephew, Rick Pollard, of Chattanooga; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Rev. Glenn Kapperman

The Rev. Glenn W. Kapperman, 74, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, at his home after a long illness.

Glenn was born in Warrick County, Ind., on Nov. 28, 1933. He graduated from Boonville, Ind., High School. He served four years in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from Bethel College, McKenzie, Tenn., and from Cumberland Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He was an ordained Cumberland Presbyterian minister and served churches in Tennessee and Kentucky. He was pastor of Falling Water Cumberland Presbyterian Church for 25 years and retired due to ill health. He also refinished and restored antique furniture.

Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Minnie Kapperman; sisters, Doris Jean Kapperman, Ruth LeGrande, Deloris Palmer and Lucille Sutton.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Linda; son, Dr. Mark (Anita) Kapperman; daughters, Jan (Steven) Stafford and Amy (Alan) Gravitte; brother, the Rev. Paul Kapperman, Marietta, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Road.

Burial will be in the cemetery at Falling Water Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Old Dayton Pike at 2 p.m. Sunday followed by a Celebration of Life service in the church sanctuary at 2:30 p.m. Participating in the service will be the Rev. Forrest Prosser, the Rev. Carlton Harper and Mr. Jim Barry.

Robert Pursley III

Robert Grant “Bob” Pursley III, 87, of Chattanooga, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, at his home.

Mr. Pursley was born in Chattanooga to Robert “Friday” and Elma Pursley II and was a graduate of Chattanooga College of Law. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder, trustee, and taught the Spencer Sunday School Class. He was retired as cost accounting manager for Standard-Coosa-Thatcher (SCT) and was a member of the Alhambra Shrine Temple, Scottish Rite and York Rite.

Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Phyllis Pursley; son, Stephen E. (Cindy) Pursley; daughters, Renee Beaumont and Terri (Javad) Feraghat; grandchildren, Stephen Pursley Jr., Christi Hessanauer, Stewart Beaumont, Sarah Pursley and David Feraghat; and two great-grandsons, Tharin Hessaunauer and Kyle Pursley.

He was preceded in death by his son, Lance Cpl. Robert G. “Robin” Pursley IV; his parents; and sister, Alwilda Pursley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the King’s Chest at Second Presbyterian Church.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Betty Rawlston

Betty Jean Brown Rawlston, 88, of Chattanooga, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Sept. 19, 2008, in a local health care facility.

A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, she was a graduate of Chattanooga High School and was a member of Central Presbyterian Church and Northside Presbyterian Church. She was a medical secretary for 40 years.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Frances Brown, Helen Curtis, Ginna Humphreys; brother, Gordon Brown.

Survivors include her son, Edwin G. Rawlston, and his wife, Debbie Rawlston, of Chattanooga; her daughter, Barbara H. Rawlston, Marietta, Ga.; two granddaughters, Katie and Kimberly Rawlston; sister, Charlotte Clopton, Chattanooga.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Private graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Tony Walliser officiating.

Oscar Sims Jr.

Oscar Lee Sims Jr., 88, of Chattanooga, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2008, in a local hospital.

A longtime resident of Chattanooga, Mr. Sims was a member of First-Centenary United Methodist Church. He was a prominent food broker for over 40 years for Carden & Sims /Consolidated Sales.

Mr. Sims was preceded in death by his wife, Louise W. Sims; and brother, Carl Sims.

Survivors are his children, J. Lynn Sims and Daryl (Cindy) Sims, all of Chattanooga; sister, Mary (William L.) Sims North, Rossville; grandson, Eric Sims, Missoula, Mont.; several nephews.

Graveside services will be held today at 3 p.m. at Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park with Dr. Dwight Kilbourne officiating.

John Stoner

John Bernard Stoner, 75, of East Brainerd, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, in a local health care facility.

He was born Dec. 6, 1932, in Henagar, Ala., to the late John Freeman and Elline Hicks Stoner.

Mr. Stoner was retired from U.S. Pipe after 31 years of service and was a U.S. military veteran serving proudly as an Army cook. For 49 years he was a member of Whorley Masonic Lodge 601 which merged with East Lake Masonic Lodge 698.

He was a current member of Morris Hill Baptist Church and a past member of Parker’s Gap Baptist Church for 30 years where he served in various positions including Sunday school teacher, and Royal Ambassador director (R.A.’s).

Survivors include Terri and Donny Ricketts, of East Brainerd; aunt, Mildred Hicks, of Henagar, Ala.; several cousins.

Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. in the East Brainerd Chapel with the Rev. Bill Mason officiating.

Burial and Masonic services will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

GEORGETOWN — Gertrude Shahan “Pert” Hickman, 85, passed away at her residence on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008.

She was of the Baptist faith, and was preceded in death by her husband, James Audie Hickman; parents, Walter and Lula Shahan; sisters, Lennie and Virginia Cofer; brothers, Andy, Wendall, Freeland, Elmer; and twin brother Walter Truman Shahan.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Walter and Linda Hickman, of Decatur; daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Gene Collins, of Georgetown, Sherry and James Erwin, of Decatur, Carolyn and Leon Ledford, of Georgetown; sister, Savannah Runyan, of Georgetown; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, at Bowers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Keith Watson officiating.

Interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Johnston Cemetery with grandsons serving as pall-bearers.

DUCKTOWN — Evelyn Marie Knight, 89, formerly of Dayton, Tenn., died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2008, at Life Care Center, Ducktown.

She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Morgan, Ga.

She was preceded in death by husband, Burton B. Knight; parents, Raymond and Florence Whitney Davis.

Survivors include son, Tom Knight, Lakeside, Tenn., Barbara Turner, Blue Ridge, Ga.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

BENTON STATION — Trisha “Renee” Loftis, 32, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2008.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Cheryl Sue Bice.

James Ballinger

LaFAYETTE — James “Bo” Ballinger, 91, passed away Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, in his home surrounded by family.

He was born July 16, 1917, in Walker County to the late Joseph and Delia Ridley Ballinger. He retired from Armstrong Carpet Mill, was a member of Foster Mill Baptist Church, and attended Old Way Baptist Church.

He also was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Marie Adkins Ballinger; and 12 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include nieces and caregivers, Bobbie Brown and her spouse, Thomas Brown, of Trion, and Sue Weaver, of Summerville; several other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, in the funeral home chapel with Pastor David Thompson officiating.

Interment will follow in LaFayette Cemetery.

LaFAYETTE — Evelyn Paulette Davis, 57, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008.

She was a member of Steele Street Church Of Christ and the LaFayette High School Class of 1970.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn N. and Fannie Lou Lawrence Davis.

Survivors are her five sisters, Anna B. Dallas, of Dayton, Ohio, Glenda (Wyman) Davis Sims, of East Point, Ga., Carolyn (Stanley) Davis Corria, of Fort Washington, Md., Fannie (David) Davis Buchanan, of Rossville, Judy (Calvin) Davis Snowden, of Union City, Ga.; one brother, Charles N. Davis, of Knoxville; aunt, Ann L. Davis, of Fort Washington, Md.; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

She was a lifelong resident of North Georgia and was an avid animal lover.
