Jim Penley

Jim “Big Jim” Penley slipped into Heaven Thursday morning, Sept. 25, 2008, at his farm in Owl Hollow, Tenn.

There was no great illness, he just wore out. “Hoss” was born on the family farm on the bluffs of Lookout Mountain where the Fairyland Club is now located on Sept. 4, 1918. His father, Ernest Austin Penley, was accidentally killed in 1923 at his job on the Incline, so James was raised by his mother, Nora McCallie Penley, and his Grand Papa, Ed McCallie, with his brother, Tom, and his sisters, Mary Emma, Martha and Eleanor.

Jim’s renowned work ethic kicked in at an early age and he began working as a child carrying water to the workmen building the Castle in the Clouds, as a golf caddie, and delivering newspapers with his Airedale, Zac. Later he worked at Humphrey’s service station at the foot of the mountain where he met his bride of 41 years, Frances Parker Penley. During the 1940s he enlisted in the Army and after service joined the Tennessee Highway Patrol as a motorcycle officer.

On his Harley he escorted the likes of Al Capone and FDR when he dedicated the Chickamauga Dam.

In the late 1940s, Jim and Frances began their family and their service station businesses in East Ridge. They also began designing and building homes throughout the Hamilton County area.

They cherished their children James William Penley Jr. (and sweet wife, Suzette), Janice Penley Keene and Phyllis Penley Owens (and her sweet husband, Mike) as well as their grandchildren, James William Penley III and Melissa, John Penley and Sue Ellen, Catherine Penley Bellew and Cane, William Josh Wilson and Michelle, Courtney Keene and Christopher Keene. Also, much loved great-grandsons. James William Penley IV, Parker Houston Wilson and new baby, Harris Penley.

Big Jim served his community in many ways— as Hamilton County Election Commissioner, county councilman and avid Democrat and Mason. He was a member of Ooltewah Baptist Church.

He loved golfing and shot his age at 72. He loved God and His green earth and all its creatures (except for squirrels, which he considered big rats) and the view he got of it all from his old red tractor.

He will be greatly missed, but we know that love is stronger than death and will keep in mind his last written words that he will “see us all in Heaven”!

He loved flowers, but in lieu of them, contributions may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga.

Visitation will be held at Heritage Funeral Home on East Brainerd Road from 2-5 p.m. Sunday and a graveside service will be at Chattanooga National Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. Monday following the procession from the funeral home at 11 a.m.
