Hamilton County Water and Wastewater Treatment Authority customers with gravity sewers will start paying an additional $8 per month for sewer service in May, according to an announcement released Monday.
“The ultimate goal is to minimize the potential impact to the environment and waterways by the Hamilton County WWTA sewer users,” the statement said.
The fee will affect about 24,000 customers throughout the county.
The authority’s board last May approved the fee plan in response to a Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation order to remove infiltration of rainwater into the county’s sewer system. If the authority does not prevent such infiltration, it could face a number of fines.
The authority’s board held off on fully implementing the plan, however, to address public concern over the additional fee. Last month, the board voted to move forward.
Fees will appear on customers’ water bills. Various local water companies do the billing for the authority.
