Lookout Mountain votes on PUD

by Mike O'Neal

The Lookout Mountain, Ga., City Council is expected to vote on a proposed planned unit development ordinance (PUD) during their regular meeting that begins today at 5:30 p.m.

A planned unit development ordinance would allow residential and commercial development in the same area and pave the way for higher density projects if the city approved by the Municipal Planning Commission and city council.

Opponents formed an ad hoc group, Lookout For Smart Growth, whose members call for a go-slow approach to passage of an ordinance that could change the makeup of their mountaintop community.

Proponents claim that without a PUD there is no comprehensive plan for growth. The proposed ordinance will be flexible enough to allow individual projects to move forward only if they fit in an overall plan for growth.

More than 200 residents attended a public hearing in March, with most expressing concerns about the proposed PUD.

Mayor Tommy Gifford supports the PUD and during the public meeting said, “My goal remains to make Lookout Mountain the best little town in America.”
