Depression-Era Song Review

No, I’m not making a playlist to signify we’re about to be thrust into another Great Depression. Nor am I suggesting that our current economic situation is anything like it was in the 1930’s. This playlist is, simply, a look back at some great songs from a very sad time in American history. What is interesting, however, is the diversity in subject matter: Folk artists were the ones who sang of hunger, depression and hard times; the Big Band singers were the ones to sing songs of hope and the bright future. Isn’t that weird?

Listen here.

Some shows:

Tonight at the Barking Legs Theater, David Long & Mike Compton will make us want to never pick up a mandolin...ever...for the rest of our lives. Showtime is 8pm.

Jennifer Daniels will host a CD-release party on Saturday night at Rhythm & Brews. Come celebrate not only the release but the birth of her twins. Showtime is 8pm.

Love is Laughter, Land Camera, the Distribution and more perform live at JJ’s Bohemia tonight. The show is at 10pm.

The Avett Brothers are in town on Saturday nigh at the Tivoli Theater. Tickets are still available at the Memorial Auditorium box office.

Have a great weekend.
