Conference

“Embracing Freedom,” a conference in which participants receive information to help them recognize and conquer generational patterns and problems in families and personal lives, will be offered today in sessions at 10 a.m. and 1:30 and 6:30 p.m. at the Impact Center at Eastgate Town Center, 5600 Brainerd Road. Among the discussion topics are bipolar disorders, depression and fear. The cost is $10. Music opportunity

Seventeen-year-old Desta Bume, a native of Africa, will speak about the barriers to education in Ethiopia and his efforts to change the cycle of poverty there on Sunday at 10 a.m. in the Parish Hall at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 630 Mississippi Ave., on Signal Mountain. Retreat

St. Mary’s Sewanee in Sewanee, Tenn., will host a Welcoming Prayer Immersion from Sunday at 6 p.m. CDT through Thursday, April 30, at 3 p.m. The topics to be covered include the human condition, the method of the welcoming prayer practice and the fruits of the prayer and extending the fruits into daily life. Gail Fitzpatrick-Hopler, president and chief executive officer of Contemplative Outreach Ltd., will lead the retreat. The cost is $450 for overnight guests and $274 for commuters. Women’s

conference

The fifth annual women’s conference at New Enon Baptist Church, 2302 Wilcox Blvd., will be today from 9 a.m. to noon. The theme is “Grace in Action.” The instructor will be the Rev. Linda McDaniel, an ordained minister and wife of Second Missionary Baptist pastor Paul McDaniel. The donation, including continental breakfast and lunch, is $15.
