NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR VOLUNTEERS

CHATTANOOGA NATURE CENTER

Carpenter: Construct or remodel two midsize animal enclosures. 821-1160, ext. 0, or choch@chattanature.org.

Creek Cleanup:

Individuals or groups needed to go out in canoes or walk creek banks to pick up trash Saturday-Sunday, May 2-3. Equipment provided.

Field Trip Teacher: Instruct elementary and middle school students on a variety of topics while leading them on hikes and nature activities; must complete training session.

Office Assistant: Help assemble membership packets, do spring cleaning of offices and kitchen shelves.

Special Event Staff: Man display/info booth at special events; set up CNC materials, hand out literature and answer general questions.

Tour Leaders: Welcome visitors on the weekends and lead tours of grounds; must be at least 18 years old.

HOSPICE OF CHATTANOOGA

Volunteer training:

Free volunteer orientation Thursday, 5-9 p.m. at the Hospice office, 4411 Oakwood Drive. Volunteers wishing to visit patients must attend additional classes on May 2, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; May 4 and May 7, 5-9 p.m. Lunch or light supper provided. 892-4289, ext. 256.

Direct Patient/Family Volunteering: Opportunities include visiting patients at home, nursing facilities, assisted living, hospitals, grief support groups and follow-up phone calls. Requires fourhour orientation plus 16 hours training. Canine-assisted therapy with TDI-certified canine also welcome. 892-4289, ext. 256 or 257.

UNITED WAY’S VOLUNTEER CENTER

Bethany Christian Services: Help trim shrubs, plant flowers, mulch, clean windows and inside spring cleaning. All materials provided. 622-7360.

Breast Cancer Network of Strength: Ambassadors, host/ hostess for educational series, support group facilitator (must be at least one-year survivor of cancer), prosthesis fitter and office assistant needed. Training is provided. 622-4454 or lalpert@networkofstrength. org.

Erlanger: Volunteers needed to work in hospital’s Gift Shop; time commitment of four-hour shift once a week. 778-7478.

Hubfest: Staff event 8 a.m to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at Heritage Park, corner of East Brainerd and Jenkins roads. Opportunities include setup, helping children with craft activities, contests and pony rides, staffing inflatables, manning sign-in and information tables, cleanup. Volunteers receive a T-shirt. E-mail name, T-shirt size and assignment preference to pateaker@comcast.net with choice of following work shifts: 8-10 a.m., 10 a.m.-noon, noon-2 p.m. or 1-3 p.m.

Riverbend Volunteers:

Work a minimum of two fivehour shifts at city’s largest outdoor event. Benefits include free admission, Tshirt, appreciation cruise party on Southern Belle. Must be 18 or older. 756-2211 or www.riverbendfestival.com.

Salvation Army: Office assistants needed to help caseworkers with incoming phone calls, data entry, emergency food distribution and other duties. Ongoing, consistent commitment needed. 308-7704.

Signal Centers Inc.:

AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers needed within the Volunteer Management Program to assist with recruiting, interviewing, placing and processing volunteers. This is a full-time position (37.5 hours per week); includes modest living allowance. 698-8528, ext. 201, or teresa_ jones@signalcenters.org.
