FRANKLIN, Tenn. — Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin clarified rumors about his father’s health and elaborated on the decision of quarterback B.J. Coleman to transfer during a Big Orange Caravan stop Monday night at The Factory in Franklin.
Kiffin said his father and defensive coordinator, Monte Kiffin, underwent back surgery a few days ago and was back at work Monday despite being told by doctors to take a week off.
About Coleman, the sophomore from Chattanooga who said last week he was leaving because he didn’t think he was in the coaches’ plans for the future, the head coach said, “I think any time, as you deal with athletes at any level, everyone is going to see something a certain way ... and they’re going to see it their way. Our job is to do everything in the best interest of the team. ... We wanted (Coleman) to stay. He really had a slow spring at the beginning and had come around the last couple of weeks.”
