Dr. Linda Hill receives UT-Chattanooga's Dalton Award

Dr. Linda C. Hill, program director of the University of Tennessee-Erlanger Health System Nurse Anesthesia Program, was recently awarded the Elizabeth Dalton Award by Dean Mary Tanner, College of Health, Education and Professional Studies at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.

"The award is given in memory of Dr. Elizabeth Dalton, who was an educator during the 1950s and '60s," said Dean Tanner. "Her talents were so balanced that she represented the ideal teacher, researcher and outreach model for a college where professional practice is as important as 'book learning.' We give this award to the best all-round faculty member, talented and exhibiting excellence in all three areas."

Dr. Hill joined the UTC-Erlanger Health System Nurse Anesthesia Program as director in August 2005.

Cook president of Dartmouth class

Alex Cook recently graduated from Dartmouth College where he served as president of the senior class.

He is the son of William and Lisa Cook and is a graduate of McCallie School.

Phi TKappa members tapped

Several students from Bradley County were inducted into the Omega Omicron Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society at Cleveland State Community College. They are Jamie Gregg, Diana Ballew, Diana Willis, Nick Poole, Cheri Rooney, Tia Seitz, Courtney Woodson, Lynita Lively, Lynn Brown, James Long, Eagle Kilgore and Jacky Leenders.

Three honored at Maryville College

Three Maryville College students from Chattanooga were presented awards during the college's Academic Awards Ceremony.

Serena Malone was presented the Outstanding Achievement Award in Foreign Language for Japanese. She is a graduate of Center for Creative Arts and the daughter of Robert and Teresa Malone and Kimberly Hall. She was also named to "Who's Who Among American Universities and Colleges."

The John W. Burgess Award for achievement in the field of political science was presented to senior political science major Molly Sneary.

She is a graduate of Ooltewah High School and the daughter of Kevin and Linda Sneary.

Katie Stangarone was presented the Evelyn Seedorf Prize in Dramatic Arts. The senior is also a graduate of Center for Creative Arts. Ms. Stangarone was also inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa.

Twitty named high school scholar

The National Society of High School Scholars announced that Silverdale Baptist Academy student Bethany Twitty from Rossville, Ga., has been selected for membership.

The society recognizes top scholars and invites only students who have achieved superior academic excellence.

Miller wins literary prize at Bowdoin

Two students at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, were awarded the Nonfiction Prize during the Honors Day ceremony. The prize is awarded for the best work of creative nonfiction.

Emily Israel Guerin of Andover, Mass., and Mary Helen Miller of Lookout Mountain, were the recipients. Ms. Miller is a graduate of Girls Preparatory School and an art history major. She is the daughter of Sarah and James Bowdoin.

Thomas wins scholarship

Ipshita Thomas, a civil engineering studt the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, received a $10,000 scholarship from the American Council of Engineering Companies, headquartered in Washington, DC.

The $10,000 scholarship was the top prize in ACEC's 2009 national scholarship program. Earlier this year, Ms. Thomas received a $1,000 scholarship from ACEC of Tennessee, which qualified her to compete in the national program.

Al's Stars scholars earn scholarships

Three local students received full college scholarships facilitated by "Al's Stars" program, which connects promising high school athletes with college sports programs.

Tyner/East Brainerd recreation center facility manager Al Cantrell and his staff created the "Al's Stars" program in 1997 to identify talented teens and guide them toward pursuing their sports on the college level.

Steve Harris Jr. , graduate of the Chattanooga School for Arts and Sciences, earned a full scholarship to Methodist University in North Carolina to play soccer. Frank Rice will join the basketball program at Hiawassee College in Madisonville, Tenn. Crystal Moore will play basketball at Motlow State Community College in Tullahoma, Tenn.

Carmichael earns veterinary degree

Chris Carmichael recently graduated summa cum laude from the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Carmichael is a graduate of Chattanooga Christian School and is the son of Alan and Mary Carmichael.

He received the Merck Veterinary Manual Award and the Dr. Hilmer Jones Endowment for Excellence Scholarship.

Woodward tops in MTSU program

Middle Tennessee State University computer information systems major Andrew R. Woodward of Soddy-Daisy received the Highest GPA for Computer Information Systems Award . He is the son of Gordon and Alice Stanfield of Soddy-Daisy.

Northwestern names scholars

Northwestern Technical College Foundation awarded $4,500 in scholarships to nine high school students from Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade and Walker counties.

The recipients were Thomas Hulse, Chattooga; Ragan Stewart, Dounty; Brittany Samuelson, Gordon Lee; Ashley Symmonds, Heritage; Doris Gooch, LaFayette; Bailey Jones, Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe; Brittany Toran, Ridgeland; Shoni Fugate, Ringgold, and Brandon Wilson, Trion.

Straussberger, King honored for service

Walker Valley High School graduate Mark D. Straussberger and Edward Taylor King of McMinn County High School were among four students recognized by Volunteer Energy Cooperative for their community service and their academic achievements with VEC's Lillard-Shadow Scholarships.

Each of the four received a $2,000 scholarship to attend college.

Mr. Straussberger, son of Jeff and Jean Straussberger, has volunteered with the Cleveland Emergency Shelter, Cleveland Junior Bass Club's Casting Kids program, Angel Tree and local food drives. He will be a freshman at Tennessee Technological University.

Mr. King, son of Ralph and Jamie King, has volunteered with the Gem Players, the Living Heritage Museum, Ingleside School for Kids Connection, his local rescue squad and he was a peer tutor. He plans to attend Bryan College.

Samuels selected for Earthwatch

Claire Samuels, a rising senior at Girls Preparatory School, was selected for the 2009 Student Challenge Awards Program from Earthwatch Institute to participate in an all-expenses-paid scientific field research expedition this summer.

Claire was chosen for a two-week study of the cultural landscape of the Yakama Ceded Lands in Washington state.

Clukey top scorer on math exam

Cleveland State Community College student Steven Clukey recently scored first-place on the 10th annual Tennessee Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges Exam.

Mr., Clukey came in first in the Calculus B category to claim a $75 cash prize and certificate.

Fourteen win Bryan scholarships

Fourteen students from Chattanooga have been awarded competitive academic scholarships to Bryan College for the 2009-10 year.

Tori Woodson, daughter of Terry and Scheloe Woodson, won a Presidential Merit Scholarship, the highest academic scholarship awarded b college. She is a graduate of Silverdale Baptist Academy, where she was vice president of the Student Council, cheerleading captain and member of Beta and Interact clubs.

Four students received Presidential Scholarships: Matthew Wilkinson, Rebekah Hildebrandt, Monica Kehrer of Ringgold, Ga., and Grace Hughbanks.

Megan Bartlett received a Dean's Merit Scholarship. Seven students received Dean's Scholarships: Stacey Tatum, Mike Bautista, Jared Markum, Adam Ambrosetti, Brooke Ivins, Anna Fry and Tom Burton.

Charity awards 40 scholarships

Forty high school seniors received $1,000 scholarships from Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Chattanooga during an awards luncheon held recently at Brainerd United Methodist Church.

Recipients and the colleges they plan to attend are Meagen Akins, Berry College; Whitney Bogus, Lee University; Yong Ho Chun, Georgia Tech; Qwantilla Crawford, Middle Tennessee State University; Megan Cromer, Clemson; Anna Dougherty, Dalton State; Janet Figueroa, University of Georgia; Erica Figueroa, University of Georgia; Justin Finch, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Teens attend finance academy

Ten area high school students were among 70 students from across the state who attended the eighth annual Accounting Academy, sponsored by the Tennessee Society of CPAs. The four-day event was held at Belmont University in Nashville, on July 19-22.

The Chattanoogans were Shalin Shah, Kristian Canler, Eryn Hawks, Anna Street, Ashley Broadway, Shelby Copeland, Adriane Gutillo, Allyson Pollard, Phillip Snyder and Eduardo Pascual of Dayton, Tenn.

During the program, participants visited the Tennessee Titans' practice facility and Curb Records, where they learned about the roles accounting and finance play in daily operations. They took trips to the offices of Deloitte & Touche LLP, Ernst & Young, LLP and Lattimore Black Morgan & Cain, PC, where students could talk with the employees about working as an accountant in a major international firm.

Two receive osteopathic degrees

Harrison Bierman Baucom of Chattanooga and Joshua Lidelle Hare of Cleveland, Tenn., were among 78 graduates to receive the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Suwanee, Ga.

Green wins Ruritan scholarship

The Taylors Ruritan Club announces that the winner of this year's $1,000 Scholarship is Tyler Paul Green of Old Fort, Tenn.

The Ruritans' "Build Your Dollars Grant Program" is a program that allows a local club to select a worthy individual from their community to receive a grant. The Taylors Ruritan Club awards scholarships to students who previously attended Taylor Elementary School.

Duke TIP program recognizes Burton

Ben Burton, a seventh-grader at Ocoee Middle School, recently attended the Duke University TIP Recognition Ceremony at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

Ben is the son of Mike and Fredda Burton of Cleveland, Tenn.

The Duke University Talent Identification Program search identifies students in 16 states who have scored in the 95th percentile grade-level achievement test. These academically talented students take the SAT or ACT to learn more about their abilities.

Duke TIP hosts recognition ceremonies to honor seventh-graders who score highest on these SAT or ACT exams.

Ben received an invitation to attend the Grand Recognition Ceremony held at Duke University for scoring in the top 3 percent of the 67,438 participants taking the college entrance exam.
