Former University of Tennessee basketball player JaJuan Smith was arrested Monday night on an assault charge, according to Hamilton County officials.
Hamilton County Sheriff’s deputies booked Smith, a former McMinn County High School star, into the jail early Tuesday morning, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Janice Atkinson.
He faces one count of assault and was released from jail on bond, court records show, and is due in court Sept. 15.
Documents that spelled out Smith’s charges weren’t available Tuesday afternoon, but Ms. Atkinson explained that assault charges typically stem from a fight or other physical altercation and can sometimes be misdemeanor charges depending on the severity of the accusation.
If the incident involved a weapon, the charge would have been the more severe aggravated assault, she said.
Smith played for the Vols from 2005-08 and averaged 13.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. In 2008, he was seleced to the All-SEC second team.
After leaving UT, Smith briefly played professional basketball in Europe.
