Staff report

Area residents are waking up this morning to a light snowfall swirling around the region.

Weather forecasters had predicted some snow — as much as an inch in Chattanooga, especially in higher elevations — today.

On Signal and Lookout mountains, snow covered grassy areas but roads remained clear. In downtown, cars parked along Market and Broad streets sported a thin coating of white flakes.

“This is the right kind of snow. It’s pretty on the grass but the roads are safe,” said one customer this morning at a Signal Mountain Road convenience store.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol reported that the snow is collecting a little on Monteagle Mountain, but the highway still is passable.

WTVC NewsChannel 9 meteorologist Bill Race said the heaviest snowfall probably will be from 5 to 8 a.m.

Hamilton County Emergency Services personnel are prepared for any bad weather along the roads, and drivers should be extra cautious today, EMS spokeswoman Amy Maxwell said.
