Georgia's three defensive assistants who were fired Wednesday have elected not to coach the Bulldogs in their bowl game.
Coordinator Willie Martinez, linebackers coach John Jancek and ends coach Jon Fabris were offered that opportunity by head coach Mark Richt. Georgia has accepted an invitation to the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La., on Dec. 28, with the official announcement set for Sunday.
"Despite the situation, Willie, John and Jon are all outstanding men and outstanding coaches," Richt said Friday. "They have all accomplished some great things during their tenures at Georgia. Willie and Jon were part of all three of our SEC Eastern division titles and two SEC championships, and John was part of our 2005 SEC title.
"I cannot wish them anything but the very best."
Richt added that he will work along with defensive line coach Rodney Garner and graduate assistants Todd Hartley and Mitch Doolittle in preparing the defense for the bowl game.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to start their bowl practices Tuesday.
Robinson suspended
Freshman defensive end Montez Robinson has been suspended indefinitely from the team following his arrest Thursday in Athens.
Robinson, 19, faces simple battery and second-degree criminal damage charges for two separate incidents involving a UGA female student. He was charged with battery for allegedly assaulting her Oct. 20 and criminal damage for allegedly breaking her car's taillights early Monday morning.
The 6-foot-5, 235-pounder from Avon, Ind., also was charged early Monday for underage possession of alcohol.
"I'm certainly disappointed in the situation with Montez," Richt said. "We have expectations and standards for our student-athletes, and his actions are not in line with those."
Robinson was the SEC defensive lineman of the week after tallying five tackles and two sacks Nov. 7 in a 38-0 win over Tennessee Tech.
