Swing into the season with a swing dance party tonight at the Clearstory, 400 East Main St. The dance will be held from 7 to 10 p.m., featuring the music of Sweet Georgia Sound.
Admission is $5, free for ages 10 and under. Light concessions such as popcorn, soft drinks and water will be available. A bonfire with marshmallow roasting will also be in the parking lot. These activities will begin immediately following the Holiday Starlight Parade in downtown Chattanooga.
Benefit helps cancer patient
Friends of Lonique "Nikki" Fleming are hosting a gospel benefit today at 5 p.m. in Fellowship Baptist Church on Dodds Avenue.
Ms. Fleming, a single mother of two children, has liver and pancreatic cancer.
There is no admission charge, but a love offering will be taken.
The concert will feature the choirs of the Mount Canaan Baptist Church, Union Grove Baptist Church and Thankful Baptist Church. Featured artist will be Kenny Springs.
Mr. Springs was named 2006 New Male Artist of the Year by Nashville's Urban Gospel Radio Station and this year's Beyond Potential Showcase Winner. The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Rizen, Paul S. Morton and Aretha Franklin have recorded his songs.

Rummage sale today in East Lake
East Lake United Methodist Church, 2903 East 37th St., is sponsoring a yard sale today to raise funds for projects that will help children in the church's neighborhood. Sale hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Furniture, small household appliances, books, toys, clothing, shoes and Christmas decorations will be sold.
Writers Guild meets Tuesday
The Chattanooga Writers Guild will meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Signal Mountain Community Guild Room of the Signal Mountain Town Center, 1111 Ridgeway Ave.
The meeting is open to the public, but it is a pot-luck dinner. Participants are asked to bring a serving utensil along with their dish, and a wrapped children's book for donation.
Musicians Tom Morgan and Lynne Haas will present the program.
Engineers Club meets Monday
The Chattanooga Engineers Club will meet Monday at noon in the Doubletree Hotel, 407 Chestnut St.
Mark Hairr will present a program on "Lithium-Ion Batteries: A Potential Solution for Advanced Vehicles." He will examine the lithium-ion battery market and how this technology may be the key for mass market sales of advanced vehicles in the future.
Mr. Hairr has served for three years as research program director for the Center for Energy, Transportation and the Environment at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Senior Neighbors accepts trip ideas
Senior Neighbors, an Alexian Brothers ministry, is accepting suggestions for its 2010 senior trip destinations.

Cookout today benefits clinics
Members of American Legion Battlefield Post 214 and owners of Mystery Dog Ranch in Ringgold, Ga., are partnering to host a cookout today to raise funds for the Alvin York and Chattanooga outpatient veterans' clinics.
The cookout will begin at noon and continue throughout the afternoon at the ranch, 975 Wooten Road in Ringgold.
Hot dogs, hamburgers and chili will be served. Activities will include horse rides, hayrides and a fishing contest. All food and activities are free, but donations will be accepted for the veterans' clinics.

United Way open house is today
United Way of Greater Chattanooga is hosting a free open house today from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the lobby of its office, 630 Market St., before the Starlight Parade.

Mutt Strut scheduled today
The second Mutt Strut takes place today in the Southside neighborhood to benefit DoGood Chattanooga. DoGood Chattanooga is a group of volunteers working with the city to promote responsible dog ownership in order to open more public places to dogs.
Walk registration will take place from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Chattanooga Choo Choo, with "Yappy Hour," canine costumes and $1 hot chocolate. At 10:30 a.m., all walkers will line up to begin the strut from the Choo Choo to Rossville Avenue for the Mainx24 Christmas Parade.
At 11 a.m., all owners and their festively dressed dogs will walk in the Christmas parade. Following the Mutt Strut, participants are welcome to visit the Church on Main Street for free photos with Santa Paws.
A free T-shirt will be given the first 100 registered walkers with a donation of $15.
Senior computer class set Friday
Senior Neighbors is offering free computer classes to seniors who have little to no computer experience.
An open house and information session on the Generations on Line computer training program will be held Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors, 1000 Newby St.
Through an ARRA Digital Divide Community Service Initiative grant, Senior Neighbors has been given the use of a specially designed software training program for seniors called Generations on Line. Class participants will learn how to use Internet search engines, how to send and receive e-mail.

History Center sets Nicely tour
The Chattanooga History Center will sponsor a walk on the riverfront to view holiday lights on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The walk will be the center's ninth Nicely tour based on the Ross's Landing portion of Maury Nicely's book, "Chattanooga Walking Tour and Historic Guide." The tour will last 1 to 11/2 hours and will include pauses to talk about points of interest.
The fee is $12 per person, which includes dessert and coffee or cider.
