Tennessee: Mayor apologizes for Obama Facebook comment

ARLINGTON, Tenn. — The mayor of a suburban Memphis city apologized for a statement he made on his Facebook page that President Barack Obama deliberately timed his speech last week about the war in Afghanistan to block the airing of the "Peanuts" Christmas television special.

Arlington Mayor Russell Wiseman also said the president is Muslim. Obama is Christian.

Wiseman sent out an e-mail to the media on Monday saying, "I regret that I offended anyone with my poor attempt at tongue-in-cheek humor amongst friends ... I allowed things to go too far," The Commercial Appeal reported.

The town also issued a statement on its Web site saying the mayor's views do not reflect its official ideals and beliefs.

Wiseman has since deleted his Facebook account.
