Mabel Bradford
Mabel Stephens Bradford, of Hixson, passed away on Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, in a local hospital. She was 89.
Mabel was born in Cowan, Tenn., and moved to Chattanooga in the second grade. She was retired from DuPont after 31 years of service. She was a 50 year member of the Eastern Star and Grand organist of the State of Tennessee in 1973. She was also a member of the Asebi Court, Ladies Shrine and the clown unit as well as a member of the American Business Women’s Association. She enjoyed participating in all the clown activities and was very devoted to her church serving as church secretary, Sunday School teacher, organist and many years singing in the choir.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Bradford; and parents, Sammie Lincoln and Clarence Stephens.
Her survivors include daughters, Linda (Lester) Kring and Ruth Ann Bradford, both of Hixson; granddaughters, Teresa Shadden, Oakdale, Tenn., Shelly Ruppe, Grand Junction, Colo., Kendra Wheatley, Soddy-Daisy and Sarah Gravitt, Hixson; one grandson, Nathan Kring, Hixson; three great-granddaughters; and four great-grandsons; brother, Clyde (Mary) Stephens, Tampa, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the North Chapel with an Eastern Star service following visitation.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Middle Valley Baptist Church, 7901 Middle Valley Road, Hixson.
Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Nathan Kring, Lester Kring, Brad Wheatley, Brian Shadden, Ken Friar, and Frank Bradford serving as pallbearers. Her special nephew, Christian Bradford will serve as honorary pallbearer.

Gary Erickson
Gary L. Erickson, 75, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Erickson had spent most of his life in the Alameda, Calif., area before moving to Chattanooga some fifteen years ago. He was a retired sprinkler fitter for fire protection and was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Erickson; stepson, Rick Gomes; and stepgrandson, John Ray.
Survivors include his children, Bonita Cross, Dee and Jim Cawdrey, Kevin and Pamela Erickson, Richard and Marty Erickson and Geanne Erickson; sister, Beverly and David Fuller; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in the South Crest Chapel with burial to follow in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.

John Grant Jr.
John Cummings Grant, Jr. of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 7, 2009.
He is survived by his daughter, Charlotte Frances Grant, Shirley Hendren Grant and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Cummings Grant and Charlotte Clifford Grant.
John was born in Chattanooga and graduated from Bright School, Baylor School and the University of Virginia and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of The Church of the Good Shepherd on Lookout Mountain. He was a past president and active member of the Chattanooga Quarterback Club, a former member of the Chattanooga Rotary Club and director of the Tennessee Golf Association. He was an avid sports enthusiast and played golf for most of his life. He will be greatly missed by his family during this temporary separation.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Friday, Dec. 11, at Wann Funeral Home.
The family will have a private graveside service officiated by the Rev. Robert Childers.

George Hendon
George A. Hendon, 90, East Ridge, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009 at his residence.
He was a member of Delray Baptist Church. Mr. Hendon along with his wife, Jessie founded the East Ridge Youth Foundation where he served as President for many years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he was assigned to the 272nd Field Artillery Battalion in the European Theater.
His wife of 67 years, Jessie Newton Hendon preceded him in death in April of this year. He was also preceded in death by his infant daughter, Rhonda; and sisters, Pat Gunn, Sarah Bankhead and Dorothy Daniel.
Survivors include his daughter, Sheena (Ken) Meyer, Chattanooga; grandson, Kenneth James Meyer Jr.; brothers, Hugh Hendon, Rossville, Lewis Hendon, Blairsville, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the chapel with Rev. Ronnie Childress officiating.
Interment will follow in National Cemetery with military honors.

Thomas Kean
Thomas Edward Kean, Fairhope, Ala., 61, passed away Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at his home.
He was born Aug. 7, 1948.
He was a native and longtime resident of Chattanooga. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp. and was employed with CSX Railroad for 33 years. He was currently employed with the Federal Railroad. He was of the Methodist faith.
Eddie had a kind heart and was a friend to everyone he met. He enjoyed woodworking and loved to pass his talent to others.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Vera Kean.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Kean; one daughter, Angie Kean; one son, Ronnie Kean and wife, Cheryl; and one grandson, Andy Lumpkin; two sisters, Carrol Kirchmeyer and Wilma Layne and husband, John Layne Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial service will be Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at 6 p.m. at Wauhatchie Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Akers officiating.

Judith Ann Kressler, of Ooltewah, passed away suddenly Monday, Nov. 23, 2009.

William Nobles
William Roy “Bill” Nobles, 79, died in a local hospital on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Betty Crowe Nobles; his parents, Edgar and Laura Nobles; and his siblings, Jewell, Clarence, Howard, Katherine, Betty Kate and Evelyn.
He leaves behind an only daughter, Elizabeth Nobles White; her husband, Tom, and their three children, Zachary, Mary Stewart and Henry. He is also survived by a brother, Ed Nobles of Chattanooga, and several nieces and nephews.
Bill Nobles was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and the Chattanooga Valley area. He was a graduate of Central High School and attended Edmondson School of Business and the University of Chattanooga. Bill worked for 10 years for the city of Chattanooga as General Superintendent of the Department of Public Works, Streets and Airports. In 1968, he was elected Trustee of Hamilton County where he served for 34 years until his retirement in August 2002. He served as a past president of the County Officials Association of Tennessee and the Tennessee Trustee's Association. He was a leader in the Democratic Party for many years on both the local and state levels. He will be remembered by his family and many friends for his fun-loving, generous and intensely loyal spirit.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Dec. 12 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, in downtown Chattanooga. A private committal will follow.

Lynn Pointer
Lynn Pointer, 68 of Chattanooga, left suddenly on Sunday, December 6, 2009 to go to his permanent home.
He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Orchard Knob Baptist Church. Lynn retired from the city of Chattanooga.
He was preceded in death by his father, Allen Pointer; mother, Esther Lee Pointer; one sister, Alma J. Moore and two brothers, John W. Pointer and George Pointer.
He leaves to mourn him his beloved and devoted wife of 45 years, Doris Pointer, Chattanooga; daughter, Leatri R. (Stanley) Cox; granddaughter, Latifah Lynae Geter, Chattanooga; a very loving and devoted grandson, Dominic A. Pointer, Demetric A. Pointer, James Geter; sister-in-law, Veronica Hardy, Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews and a very dear friend, Bennie Bonner. He will be missed by his favorite pets, Lil Bear and Peanut Pointer.

Roosevelt Robinson Jr., 82, passed away Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at a local health care facility.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sarah and Roosevelt Robinson Sr.; sisters, Beatrice Davis, Rosa Lee Keith and Elnora Clay and daughter, Voncina “Rita” Robinson Porter.
He is survived by his wife, Grace Payeton Robinson; daughter, Betty Willis; stepdaughters, Belinda, Betty and Kathy Payeton, Sherrian Dortch and Karen Cox; stepson, Bobby Payeton, of Gaylesville, Ala.; grandchildren, Alexander Bentley, Marcia Willis and Sharkethia Porter; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Ernestine (Neal) Commons; brother, William “Joe Lewis” (Juanita) Robinson; brother-in-law, Daniel Chandler, of Indianapolis, Ind.; and sister-in-law, Lizzie Ann Sanderfur; cousins, nieces and nephews.

Glenn Edward Stoe, 78, of Harrison, passed away Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at a local health care facility.
He was retired from the USAF with 22 years of service and he also retired from CCA at the Silverdale facility with 17 years of service.
He was of the Baptist faith and was preceded in death by his wife, Ann M Stoe.

Jamie Alan Suits, 45, of Knoxville, beloved husband and father was suddenly called to the Lord Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009 at St. Mary's North.

Alan Wilson
Duane Alan Wilson, 44, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009.
Alan attended Oak Street Baptist Church.
His passions were playing golf, being a Tennessee Vol Fan, and watching Lady Trojans Softball. He was a 1983 graduate of Ooltewah High School, a United States Army veteran and was currently employed by Astec Industries.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Theresa Graham Wilson; paternal grandparents, William U. and Mary Wilson; maternal grandmother, Ruth Butturini, and an aunt, Mary Ruth Mills.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 20 years, Rhonda Winters Wilson; son, Michael (Cortni) Wilson; daughter, Taylor Wilson; father, Wayne Wilson; mother and step-father, Linda and Gary Isaac; sister, Karen Wilson (Mark Smith); aunt, Mickey Reno; uncle, Butch Mills; father and mother-in-law, Howard and Carolyn Winters; and several other in-laws, cousins and nieces.

Louise Woodruff
Louise H. “Lee” Woodruff, 81, a resident of Hilton Head Island, S.C., since 1986 and previously of Memphis and Signal Mountain, died peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, in Charlotte, N.C. after a brief illness. She died as she had lived— on her own terms. In the days prior, she was surrounded by family and close friends.
She was born Nov. 22, 1928, in Philadelphia, Pa., the only child of the late Comdr. Lester Triem Haldeman and Ethel Dowler Laird Haldeman. She was predeceased by her husband, William W. Woodruff IV.
She is survived by her three children, Anne Laird-Blanton, of San Rafael, Calif., Aletta W. Weitz, of Atlanta, William W. Woodruff V, of Charlotte, N.C.; and her five adult grandchildren.
Lee graduated from Cornell University in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority. She retired from Holiday Inns Inc., Memphis, in 1984 after working as a systems analyst and their manager of Payroll and Benefits Systems. Lee and Bill were charter members of All Saints Episcopal Church, HHI, where she served on the Vestry and as the Senior Warden for two years, and has chaired the “Care Committee” since its inception. She also volunteered extensively at the Hilton Head Hospital, the Art League of Hilton Head and with the Hilton Head Garden Tour. She lived life fully, loved to travel, had a passion for dachshunds and single malt scotch, and was a great entertainer. Lee was a vibrant woman and a great friend who will be missed by many.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at All Saints Episcopal Church, Hilton Head Island, S.C. where her ashes will be placed in the garden of the Columbarium. The Rev Richard C. Lindsey and Mark R. Brinkmann will preside.

Virginia Wright
Virginia Lee Allen Wright departed this world on Monday, Dec. 7, 2009.
She was born in Independence, Mo.m on Aug.24, 1929. She had resided in Chattanooga since 2001. Virginia graduated from Crissman High School in 1947. She was actively involved in drama and debate and was the Homecoming Queen for Crissman in 1946. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Education at the University of Central Missouri in 1951 and embarked on a lifetime of teaching. In 1967, she earned Master's in Speech Pathology from Kansas University. She was a lifelong Jayhawk and Kansas City Chiefs fan.
Virginia led an extraordinary life working as a teacher and speech pathologist in New York, New Mexico, Kansas, Missouri and Germany. She was actively involved in drama and debate clubs during her teaching career.
She was a loving mother, devoted spouse, and faithful servant of the church. Virginia's greatest adventure was as a teacher in the Department of Defense School system in Germany where she touched the lives of hundreds of military families from 1980-1995. She was an avid traveler and traveled to every country in Europe and many in the Middle East.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Wayne Wright; and her parents, Gertrude and Euclid Allen.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Sean (Leslie) Wright, of Desoto, Kan., Jenette (Paul) Dean, of Chattanooga, Dennis (Petra) Wright, of St. Louis, Mo. and Julie (Randy) Heithoff, of Abilene, Texas. She was a beloved grandmother of 12 and one great-grandchild.
A Funeral Mass will be held 12:30 p.m. Friday at St. Jude Catholic Church with Father Charlie Burton officiating.
Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

WHITWELL — Christian Zane Brown infant son of Rhonda Hughes and John Brown, passed away Monday, Dec. 7, 2009.
He was preceded in death by brother, John Leif Brown; grandfather, Charles Robert Hughes Sr.; grandparents, Walter Frank and Sarah Jane Brown.
Those left to cherish his memories are parents, Rhonda Hughes and John Brown; grandparents, Alice (Sam) Tudors, all of Whitwell.

PIKEVILLE — John Thomas “Tom” Graham, 88, passed away Monday, Dec. 7, 2009.
He was born Jan. 17, 1921, to the late Plez and Ruth Hixson Graham. His brothers, Staff Sergeant James P. and F.B. Graham; sister, Olena Graham Morgan; and brothers-in-law, Herbert Sweat and W.R. “Jack” Heiss also preceded him in death.
Tom is survived by his sisters, Betty Sweat, Ruth Ellen (Leon) Tate and Pauline Heiss; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted from John M. Hixson Cemetery in Bledsoe County at 11 a.m. CST Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, with the Rev. Doug Silvers officiating.

Ben Kellar
CLEVELAND — Ben Kellar, 73, a resident of Cleveland, passed away at his residence Monday, Dec. 7, 2009.
He was born in Etowah, the son of the late Odell and Winnie Kellar. He attended school in Etowah and then proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He had lived in Cleveland for the past 43 years where he owned and operated several businesses. Most recently he owned and retired from City Print of Cleveland. He was a member of Westwood Baptist Church.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Danny Kellar.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sarah Schrader Kellar, of Cleveland; sons: Tony Kellar and wife, Christie, and Mark Kellar, all of Cleveland; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Pastor Sammy Hooker and Pastor Don Whitehead officiating.
Interment will follow in Fort Hill Cemetery concluding with a white dove release ceremony.

Dortha Kerley
Dortha Lillian Kerley, 87 of Pikeville passed away on Monday, Dec. 7, 2009.
Dortha was a very unselfish, devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved going to church. She went every time the doors would open. She was of the Church of God faith and a member of Shady Vale Church of God.
Dortha was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Olin Kerley; son, Walter Kirk Kerley; daughter, Sharon Lillian Kerley; parents, Casto and Bessie Tollett; brothers, Mose, Leon, Carl and Dee Tollett; sister, Mary Ruth Tollett; great-granddaughter, Lillian Raven Kerley.
She is survived and will be sorely missed by her sons and daughters-in-law, Olin and Linda Kerley, Dewey and Wanda Kerley, Warren and Rachel Kerley all of Pikeville, and Joe and Cyndra Kerley of Charlottesville, Va.; daughters and sons-in-law; Virginia and Mark Smith, Nan and Ralph Brown, Vivian and Bill Tollett, all of Pikeville, and Janet and Ronnie Parham, Charlottesville, Va.; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
A celebration of her life will be held in the chapel of Pikeville Funeral Home on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009 at 2 p.m. CST with the Rev. Danny Lee and the Rev. Marty Goins officiating.

Mildred Kieffer
GRANDVIEW — Mildred C. Kieffer, 96, died Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at the Wharton Nursing Home in Pleasant Hill, Tenn.
Born in Grandview, Tenn., Mildred was the daughter of the late Lige Cunningham and Florence Harrison Long. She and her husband, Richard, were self-employed dry cleaner owners in St. Louis, Mo., before moving back to Grandview in 1973. She was a member of Grandview Baptist Church, “Circle of Friends”, and for over 50 years a member of the O.E.S. Chapter 264 Maplewood, Mo. Mildred was also a member of the Grandview Twirlers and Grandview Community Center. She was an accomplished china painter.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband Richard L. Kieffer; brothers, Melvin and Wendell Cunningham; half brother, Jack Cunningham; half sister, Jean Lemons and stepsister, Bobbie Brady.
Survivors include her brother, Richard Cunningham, of Grandview, half sister, JoAnn Davis, of Grandview and half sister, June Schubert, of Rockwood.
Funeral services will be held today at noon in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Armour officiating.
Interment will follow in Mt. Sulpher Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 10 a.m. to noon at the funeral home.

EVENSVILLE — Sandra Fay Minton, 62, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at Erlanger.
She was a longtime resident of Rhea County, Tenn., and of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by husband, Jimmy Lee Minton; parents, James W. and Wilma Hurd Perry; infant son, Larry Ray Minton.
Survivors: five children, Gary Minton, of Dayton, Dale Minton, of Evensville, Vickie Hargis, of Sale Creek, Ronnie Minton, of Dayton and Wallace Minton, of Evensville; five sisters and brothers, Thelma, Liz, James, Ross and Jerry; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison.

Billy Tate
WHITWELL — Billy Floyd Tate, 83, passed away Monday, Dec. 7, 2009.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Joyce Sharp Tate; son, Butch Tate; parents, Floyd and Beatrice Tate; sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Tate and Ira Kell; great-granddaughter, Carlie Carson.
Mr. Tate was a veteran of the United States Navy; retired from Combustion Engineering Co.; he was a woodworker making custom made cabinets and beautiful furniture for his family. In his younger days he played baseball for the Whitwell Baseball team as a pitcher known as “Bulldog” or “Red”. He was the pitcher for the 1947 Whitwell Semi-Pro Baseball Champions.
Those left to cherish his memories are children, Susie Tate (Wade) Merciers, Peggy (Ronnie) Holtcamp; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a very close and dear friend, Louise Coffman.
Family will receive friends 3-9 p.m. CST today, Dec. 9.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. CST Thursday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. John Potts and the Rev. Ron Namanny officiating.

RINGGOLD — Larry Stuart Atkins Sr., 65, was called to his Heavenly Home by his Lord and Savior Monday, Dec. 7, 2009.
A lifelong resident of the Ringgold, Chattanooga area, he was a retired truck driver from Sovex and Sathers. He spent his last 30 years enjoying his home place he built. He loved growing flowers, mowing his grass and walking with his dog “Kelly”. He was a loving generous and kind man. He dedicated his life helping others and never asked for anything in return except let me talk to you about Jesus. He was loved and cherished by all the lives he touched. He always said “I don't have friends I have extended family”.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Sarah Rebecca Ware, Foster Parents, John and Elaine Goodbrad; sons, Richard and Peter John Atkins; son-in-law, Scott Aycock II and brothers, Ricky Wright and Sonny Atkins.
He was reunited and wed his childhood sweetheart and had a happy 10 years with his love that he leaves behind Carolyn Beasley Atkins. Other survivors include his children who deeply loved and cherished him: Larry Atkins II, Ellen Flinn, Jay (Melissa) Carpenter, Becky (Jason) Wilson, Peter Atkins, Tammy Kilgore, Deidra Combs and Paul Stuart, His friend and mother of his children, Linda Bick; his loving grandchildren who knew him as Pop-Papaw-Poppy and Pops, Rich and Scotty Aycock, Alesha-Ann, Justin and Kimberly Carpenter, John Flinn, Ashley Bone, Craig (Trina) and Christopher (Brandi) Groce, Brittany, Josh and Jacob Kilgore, Kain and Alex Stuart; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley Wright and Debbie Atkins; brother, Eddie (Missy) Wright; brother-in-law, Pete (Alma) Beasley; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

ROSSVILLE — Lela Helen Oler, 91, passed away Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, in a local health care facility.
A native of Eddysville, Ky., Mrs. Oler has spent the greater part of her life in the Chattanooga area and retired from Rivoli Mills with more than 60 years of service. She was a charter member of Rossville Church of the Nazarene and will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.
Survivors include her daughter, Eugenia Carty; two nieces, Diana Holland-Russell and Teresa Holland; nephew, Porter Holland; sister-in-law, Tommie L. Holland; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

RINGGOLD — Eugene Franklin “Gene” Pierce, 95, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at his residence.
He was a lifelong resident of the North Georgia area. Mr. Pierce was a member of Burning Bush Baptist Church and the Young at Heart Seniors Group. He retired from Standard Coosa Thatcher and was a well known area farmer. Mr. Pierce was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Edwards Pierce; son, Franklin Eugene “Sonny” Pierce; father, William S. Pierce; mother, Bertie Musgrove Pierce; stepmother, Ruby Pierce; brothers, Ambrose Pierce; sisters, Velma Brown, Etta Shell, Ada Blevins.
