Kwanzaa event set Thursday
Explore the meanings of Kwanzaa during a Lunch and Learn program at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center, 200 E. M.L. King Blvd., on Thursday.
The center will show "The Black Candle" documentary from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Narrated by Maya Angelou and filmed in the U.S., Africa, Europe and the Caribbean, "The Black Candle" explains why the seven principles of Kwanzaa are so important to African Americans today. It traces the holiday's growth out of the Black Power movement in the 1960s to its present-day observance as a global holiday embraced by more than 40 million celebrants.
The Kwanzaa Lunch and Learn is free and open to the public. Participants should bring a bag lunch.

Lee Children's Chorale sings
The Lee University Children's Chorale is presenting a Christmas concert on Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Dixon Center on the Cleveland, Tenn., campus.
The Children's Chorale is a community choir established in 1996 to provide supplemental singing experiences for Cleveland children between the ages of 9 and 14.
The concert is free and open to the public. It will be followed by a reception.
Auditions for the spring semester will be Jan. 15 between 4 and 6 p.m. and on Jan. 16 between 10 a.m. to noon. Tuition is $100 for the semester and parents are responsible for purchasing a uniform.

Train museum adds excursions
Tennessee Valley Railroad is adding additional North Pole train rides due to early ticket sell-outs.
Tickets are available for rides on Tuesday at either 5:45 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. The ticket price is $22 for everyone.

Sequatchie studio open house today
Carol Kimmons is opening her studio, Sassy Shadows Pottery, today and Sunday for an open house from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. CST.
The studio is located at 1233 Cartwright Loop, at the Sequatchie Valley Institute between Dunlap and Whitwell, Tenn. She will be selling "green gifts" including natural leaf tiles, herb mugs, bird feeders, pendants, muscadine cider and herbal teas.

Holiday hayride in Ooltewah
"O Holy Night: A Holiday Hayride" is being sponsored by Lighthouse United Methodist Church, 9125 Snow Hill Road in Ooltewah, on Friday from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Rain date is Dec. 19.

Metropolitan Bells in Dayton
The Metropolitan Bells, a Chattanooga handbell choir, will be the featured guests in "Christmas on the Hill," at Bryan College tonight. The free concert by the college Music Department begins at 7:30 p.m. in Rudd Auditorium.
Also performing will be the Bryan Chorale, Women's Chorus, Chamber Singers, the brass and flute ensembles, and the Bryan College Community Children's Choir.
Vann House program tonight
The final night of "Christmas by Candlelight" will be held at the Chief Vann House this evening from 5 to 9 p.m. The Vann House is located at the intersection of Georgia highways 225 and 52 near Chatsworth, Ga.
The public is invited to enjoy the sights and sounds of a 19th-century Christmas in the historic 1805 Cherokee home.
The museum at the Vann House will be open for tours. Visitors may view museum exhibits and a short film before starting the tour. Luminaria will light the paths between the museum and the mansion.
Visitors may tour the mansion at their own pace with guides stationed throughout to answer questions. Visitors may also tour four restored Cherokee log buildings also lit by candles.
Admission is $5 adults, $4.50 seniors, and $3.50 for youth. Children 5 and under are free.

Final week for toy drive at Strasburg
Strasburg Children in Hamilton Place is holding a toy and baby needs drive through Dec. 20.
Shoppers are asked to donate a new, unwrapped toy (not battery-operated) or diapers, baby blankets and baby wipes, which will be donated to the Chattanooga Community Kitchen. All donations of a nonperishable food or baby foods and cereals will be distributed to the Chattanooga Area Food Bank.

Watts Bar employees help
Employees at TVA's Watts Bar Nuclear Plant are providing more than 200 food baskets, valued at approximately $11,000, to deserving families during the holidays.
Additionally, they are distributing more than $22,500 to surrounding counties to provide residents in need with clothing, toys and other items.
Watts Bar employees annually provide food baskets for holiday dinners to area families through the site's Community Services Group. The group also provides support throughout the year to families in Rhea, McMinn, Roane, Monroe and Meigs counties, helping them obtain groceries, clothing and needed supplies.
Red Cross open house Wednesday
The staff of the Greater Chattanooga Area American Red Cross invites volunteers, donors, community supporters and representatives of partner agencies to a holiday open house on Wednesday.
The open house will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Red Cross headquarters, 801 McCallie Ave.
Bluegrass Christmas Dec. 19
Members of the Harrison Ruritan Club will host a Bluegrass Christmas on Dec. 19 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the clubhouse, 5709 Tyner Lane, next to Harrison Elementary School on Highway 58.
Six bands will perform. Barbecue, hamburgers, chili, hot dogs and desserts will be sold.
Admission to the event is free, but donations will be taken by the Ruritans to support their service projects.

'Nutcracker' in Spring City
Center Stage Dance Company of Chattanooga will perform selections from "The Nutcracker" on Friday at Tennessee Valley Theatre in Spring City, Tenn. The event starts at 7 p.m. with desserts and coffee.
