'The Christina Touch'

Christina Glidden's journey as a jewelry designer has taken her from selling on a school bus in Mexico to Hollywood, Calif. At age 13, she sold her creations to classmates on the way to school in Mexico City. Last year, her work was seen on the television shows "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," "The Hills" and "Bridget's Sexiest Beaches."

An exhibition of Ms. Glidden's jewelry is on display at Lookout Mountain Gallery through Dec. 30. What makes her work distinctive is the international influence and inspiration she brings to each piece.

"I was born in Pakistan and have lived in Iran, Canada, Brazil and Mexico," said Ms. Glidden, a resident of Chattanooga for the past seven years. "I have had the great fortune to experience many beautiful countries that all have their own distinct cultures and amazing artisan work."

The designer works primarily with sterling silver because she says it is forgiving, flexible and easy to use. Her favorite gems are turquoise, chalcedony, amethyst, Peruvian opal, opalite and agate. Techniques include stringing knotting, wire wrapping and crocheting with fishing line, leather and sterling wire.

"My designs tend to be contemporary/abstract or bohemian/chic, and my clients mention the 'Christina touch' because of the international flavor that runs through everything I make," she said.

For Ms. Glidden, constructing jewelry is a very personal experience. She says the creative process is like meditation and makes her feel calm and centered.

Her company, Jewelry by Christina, was established in 2006. More designs can be seen at www.jewelrybychristina.com.

Also on display at the gallery are paintings by Chuck Frye, found-object metal sculpture by Denice Bizot and photographs of archetypal evening gowns by Lily Smernou.

Lookout Mountain Gallery, 3535 Broad St., Suite A, is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday, 4-8 p.m. Saturday and by appointment. Call 508-8117.
