ALCOA, Tenn. — The city of Alcoa is negotiating with a South Carolina firm to develop and operate a gas-to-energy facility at the Alcoa/Maryville/Blount County Public Landfill.
The Alcoa City Commission has authorized the city staff and attorney to negotiate with Enerdyne Power Systems Inc. of Matthews, S.C., to turn methane gas produced by the landfill into electricity. The power would then be sold to the Tennessee Valley Authority.
According to The Daily Times of Maryville, Enerdyne would share the profits with the city.
Over a 20-year period, the energy sales to TVA through Fort Loudoun Electric Cooperative, the utility that serves the landfill, is expected conservatively to bring in $1.2 million.
