The Tennessee Department of Transportation announced Thursday that it was allotting grant funds for roadscape projects to 12 cities, including Cleveland and Lakesite.
"These funds will help make improvements along the roadways that serve as the front door to our communities," Gov. Phil Bredesen said in a news release from TDOT.
Cleveland's $119,198 grant will go toward landscaping the median along State Route 60, which will include trees and shrubs as well as bio-retention to help with stormwater runoff and water quality, according to the TDOT release.
Cleveland Assistant City Manager Melinda Carroll said Thursday that officials have been waiting more than a year for the grant, which will help beautify the road coming off Interstate 75 at exit 25.
"This grant is going to be exceptional in helping us to welcome citizens or people off the interstate," she said.
The town of Lakesite in Hamilton County will get $29,280 to establish a gateway to the city that includes a "Welcome to Lakesite" sign.
"That's good news," Lakesite Mayor Robert Mullin said Thursday. "We had applied for that some time ago."
Mr. Mullin said the sign would go at the southern entrance to the city.
