Family fun at Nutcracker Sweets

What: The fourth Nutcracker Sweets dessert benefit was held recently in the Silver Ballroom of the Sheraton Read House. Benefits: The Family Violence Shelter and Sexual Assault Center of Partnership for Families, Children and Adults. Highlights: Guests enjoyed desserts from area restaurants and caterers and entertainment by the Chattanooga Boys Choir, Metropolitan Bells and Chattanooga State Chorale. Northwest Bank supports JA

What: Northwest Georgia Bank Navigators win Battle of the Bank’s trophy in the Strike for Education Rock ‘n’ Bowl competition at Holiday Bowl.

Benefits: Junior Achievement of Chattanooga.

Amount raised:

Seven Northwest Georgia Bank teams of six raised $3,900. The bank has raised almost $30,000 in the last six years.

Northwest Bank volunteers: Employees began teaching the JA curriculum in Catoosa classrooms in 1993. This year, the bank fielded 16 JA instructors in 20 local classrooms and 12 volunteers in 15 classrooms.

Low-country boil boosts Thomas Foundation

What: A low-country boil in Warehouse Row courtyard was followed by a golf tournament at Chattanooga Golf and Country Club. Benefits: The fundraiser netted $80,000 for the Jordan Thomas Foundation, which is enabling the foundation to choose a fourth child to receive a new prosthetic. Highlights: About 400 guests participated in a silent auction and buffet and danced to blues, zydeco and Cajun music by Delicious Blues Stew from New Orleans.

Community steps up to support Red Cross

What: Claudia Moore, spokeswoman for the Greater Chattanooga Area American Red Cross, said several community agencies stepped up to assist the Red Cross’s flood-relief operation with donations to the disaster-relief fund. These Red Cross volunteers spent more than 7,000 hours assisting flood victims. Who was helped: 240 clients impacted by fall floods. Fire victims: Also, within a 10-day span, 43 people affected by home fires received approximately $6,500 in assistance.
