Athens businessman dies of gunshot wound

by Ron Clayton

ATHENS, Tenn. — An Athens businessman shot in a midnight Thursday burglary at one of his plants has died.

Erlanger hospital officials verified Saturday that James Jeffery Beene, 58, died from his injuries.

Athens police reported Friday that Mr. Beene had camped out in an abandoned portion of his plant on Congress Parkway to try and catch thieves who were stealing items from the building.

About a month ago, Mr. Beene held a vandal at gunpoint until police arrived.

About midnight Thursday, he called 911 and reported he had caught another burglar.

When police arrived, they found Mr. Beene lying on the floor, suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was flown to Erlanger hospital, but later died.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was called in to help with the crime scene investigation, but no weapons or other evidence were found, according to Athens police.

No one from the police department was available for comment.
