BLOG: SEC differentiates between Spurrier’s and Kiffin’s comments

by Wes Rucker

KNOXVILLE — I just got off the phone with Southeastern Conference spokesperson Charles Bloom, and he explained the league’s decision to not issue a reprimand for South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier’s comments questioning Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin’s recruiting ethics.

Kiffin, as I’m sure most have heard by this point, was reprimanded today by SEC commissioner Mike Slive for violating the league’s “code of ethics.” Kiffin claimed Florida coach Urban Meyer “cheated” by illegally contacting prospect (and eventual UT signee) Nu’Keese Richardson during his official visit to Knoxville.

That wasn’t actually a violation, though, and Kiffin offered the apology Foley requested this afternoon.

“Looking at both statements from the two coaches, we felt that Coach Spurrier’s comments did not rise to the level that Coach Kiffin’s did,” Bloom said.

Bloom added that he wasn’t aware of any UT official calling the SEC to complain about Spurrier’s comments, and several UT officials backed that claim.

Attempts to reach UT athletic director Mike Hamilton today haven’t been successful, and he hasn’t returned voice mails or text messages. Hamilton has been on the road with the football staff today for the annual Knoxville-Nashville-Memphis, day-after recruiting celebration.

We’ll have a full story on the situation, and we’ll stay on top of any updates, but I figured we needed to emphasize the SEC’s Spurrier clarification this evening.

One thing is obvious, you gotta hand it to Lane Kiffin, I'm sure that he didn't cheat when he was coach of the Raiders. Anyone with as dismal a record as his, 5-15, couldn't have cheated at all!!! What an absolute idiot!!!! I can't wait until he brings ole Rocky Top and Smoky down to the swamp this September!!!! It's definitely gonna be "Rocky at the top" for the coaching staff, after that game! You think it was bad up in Knoxville this past season. Like you needed to give "Tebow and the boys" any more motivation to whup your fanny!! You insulted their coach! That was worse calling their mother a bad name! Oh, by the way, Kiffin's college record is 0-0, as in, "Uh,Oh... I really blew it and looked like a freakin' idiot when I publicly accused Urban Meyer of cheating, when he really didn't." 0-0, as in Kiffin's IQ!!!! Way to go Laney boy, great start at UT!! Remember, to quote the Ole Ball Coach, "You can't spell Citrus without UT." Hey, Citrus Bowl? UT will be dying to play there on New Year's Day during Kiffin's tenure. Uh, how's the weather in Shreveport, the end of Dec.? That's a nice place for a bowl game. Get used to it...... sucker!!!
