Thrasher VFW Post wins honor

by Elizabeth Ryan

The Wilkes T. Thrasher Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4848 received the George Washington Honor Medal from the Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge on Sunday in recognition of last May’s Memorial Day celebration.

“They are always recognizing and doing things for veterans,” said state Rep. Bo Watson, R-Hixson, who wrote a letter in support of the post’s award application. “While the Memorial Day event is a highlight event, it’s just a culmination of a lot of different things that they do throughout the community.”

Freedoms Foundation member Harriett Harris nominated the post for the national honor because she was moved by last spring’s ceremony, which had record turnout.

“It was just so patriotic,” she said. “It made you feel all red, white and blue.”
