Delta Queen arriving in town tonight

The Delta Queen riverboat apparently has a little more oomph in her than expected.

The 82-year-old steamboat, which left its winter home in New Orleans on Feb. 5, is set to arrive about 10 p.m. tonight in Chattanooga, about eight hours ahead of schedule.

The boat, which once ferried passengers up and down the Mississippi River, will be involved in a day of events Wednesday, including rides for local dignitaries, a media tour and a press conference.

Once settled in its permanent berth at Coolidge Park, the riverboat is scheduled to be turned into a hotel.

A press conference is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday with Sydney Slome, who will manage the Delta Queen Hotel. The hotel is expected to open for guests by April 1, Mr. Slome has said.
