Athens: Escapee charged in Beene killing

by Ron Clayton

ATHENS — A Meigs County Jail escapee who was recaptured just this week has been charged with fatally shooting Athens businessman Jeffery Beene during a Jan. 29 burglary.

McMinn County authorities just moments ago said Daniel Lankey, who was captured Monday, was carrying a handgun and that the ballistics matched evidence from the Beene homicide.

Sheriff Steve Frisbie said Mr. Lankey has been charge with felony murder. Authorities are looking for a second suspect in the case, he said.

Mr. Lankey was serving time for rape when he escaped from the Meigs County Jail in December, records show.
