Fred Davis Jr.

Charles Frederick “Fred” Davis Jr. died at home on Monday evening, Feb. 9, 2009.

He was born in Columbia, S.C., on Oct. 25, 1942.

Fred was a graduate of Dreher High School and the University of South Carolina, Columbia, S.C., where he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. Upon graduation, Fred began his career at the National Aeronautic & Space Administration (NASA) in Houston, Texas. During his tenure with NASA, Fred designed the life-support mechanisms used by the astronauts during the Apollo Space Mission. He was most noted for designing the Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA) support unit used by Ed White on his historic space walk. Many of his designs from this period are housed in public exhibits at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C.

Fred continued his career in engineering after NASA, first with Westinghouse Electric Corp. in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Baltimore, Md., where he designed nuclear components for submarines; then with Babcock & Wilcox in Lynchburg, Va., where he designed storage racks for spent nuclear fuel. In 1980, Fred returned to Westinghouse Electric Corp. where, until his death, he continued his work in Pensacola, Fla., and Chattanooga as a principal engineer in nuclear equipment engineering, earning quality achievement awards and U.S. patents for his nuclear component designs. But perhaps of all his professional contributions he will be most remembered by his “boys” and all who shared his final days at Westinghouse as a kind and patient mentor to emerging mechanical engineers.

Fred was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the United States Junior Chamber (Jaycees), and enjoyed working with little league football and Indian Guides. He was an avid life-long learner and continued his educational pursuits in various fields; he took great joy in sharing knowledge with others, frequently working after hours teaching computer courses to fellow employees. His hobbies included wood carving, computer programming, DIY projects, but most of all being “Poppa” to Cullen and sharing the joyful afternoon outings they took to swim at the YMCA, play in the park and go “hippity-hop to the barber shop.”

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Frederick Davis Sr., and Carrie Elizabeth Goodale Davis, of Columbia, S.C.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sharon Martin Davis, of Hixson; his daughter, Melanie Davis Fewell, of Cleveland, Tenn.; his son, Mark Watson Davis and daughter-in-law, Alyssa Cason Davis, both of Atlanta; his beloved grandson, Cullen Keller Fewell, of Cleveland; his sister, Sandra Davis Moulton, of Gibsonville, N.C.; his brother, Robert Cary Davis, of Gibsonville, N.C.; an aunt and uncle, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Fred gave so much of himself. His impeccable moral character, generosity, kindness, optimism, gentle nature and sense of humor made him a great man. He saw each of us for who we hoped to be; we admired him for the man he was. A bright light has been extinguished. He was loved by all and will be dearly missed.

The service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, at Chattanooga Funeral Home in Hixson.

Interment at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers are Dion Bradford, Robert Chitty, John Cook, Christopher Hamilton, Patrick Kelly, Creed Taylor, Chunyun Wang and Walter Wojick.
