KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Fire Marshal's Office has cleared for opening one of three University of Tennessee fraternity houses that closed last month because of fire code deficiencies.
Fire Marshal spokeswoman Shannon Ashford says Pi Kappa Phi has installed a new smoke detection system and members will be allowed to occupy their house Monday, two days before spring semester begins.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reports a Sigma Phi Epsilon has made corrections, will resume occupancy Tuesday with a "fire watch" and awaits a follow-up inspection scheduled for Thursday.
It remains questionable when Lambda Chi Alpha can reopen its house.
During the Dec. 13 inspections, the Fire Marshal found numerous fire codes problems at the fraternity houses including improper locks on bedroom doors, storing a motorcycle in the house and cooking on the roof of the building.
