by Ron Clayton

ATHENS, Tenn. — The driver in a July crash that killed two people was sentenced to 16 years in prison this week in McMinn Criminal Court.

William Ryan Ottman, 29, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.18 when he drove his Geo Tracker across the center line of State Route 305 and struck an oncoming vehicle, records showed.

Teenagers John Daugherty, of Englewood, and Rachel Slade, of Etowah, were killed in the crash. Their passenger, Shane Standridge, was injured, police said.

Mr. Ottman pleaded guilty to vehicle homicide, vehicular assault and drug charges, court records show.

Investigators reported finding beer cans and marijuana in Mr. Ottman’s car after the crash.
