KNOXVILLE — Former Lady Volunteer All-American Candace Parker and husband Shelden Williams of the Sacramento Kings are expecting their first child this spring, according to the Los Angeles Sparks team Web site.
“Shelden and I are very excited to be expanding our family,” Parker told the site. “We feel blessed and look forward to becoming parents.”
For the Sparks, Parker flourished in her first season in the WNBA, becoming the first player to win both Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player honors.
Parker will continue to work out in preparation for the 2009 season, which begins on June 6, according to the team site.
“Candace and I visited about this,” said Tennessee coach Pat Summitt through a university release. “She's excited, and I'm really excited for her. I told her that if she has a little girl I hope she'll be a future Lady Vol.”
Parker won back-to-back NCAA championships with the Lady Vols in 2007 and 2008. She led the team in scoring (20.6) and rebounding (8.8) in her final season at Tennessee. She earned the NCAA Final Four MVP award in 2007 and 2008.
Parker's teammate Lisa Leslie sat out the 2007 season because of her pregnancy.
