New opportunities for volunteers

AMEDISYS HOSPICE

* Patient Assistance: Sit with patients. Free group or individual training. 499-0018.

AMERICAN RED CROSS

* Opportunities: Volunteers needed for disaster response, health and safety instructors and service to the Armed Forces. Free training.

* Hospital Volunteers: Help patients and their families in area hospitals one day a week. 265-3455.

AVALON HOSPICE

* Caregiver Assistance: Support and companionship needed for patients with terminal illnesses and their families. Write letters, read to patients, run errands, bake, help with yard work, make blankets and lap quilts. Free training, time commitment of one to three hours per week. 892-3737

. CHATTANOOGA AREA FOOD BANK

* Drivers: Pick up food from grocery stores driving food bank vehicles. Training provided, time commitment of two and a half hours one day a week. Food bank hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday. 622-1800 or e-mail sgillum@chattfoodbank.org.

CHATTANOOGA NATURE CENTER

* Special Event Staff: Man display/info booth at special events; set up CNC materials, hand out literature and answer general questions.

* Tour Leaders: Welcome visitors on the weekends and lead tours of grounds, must be at least 18 years old.

GIRLS INC. OF CHATTANOOGA

* Data Entry: Detail-oriented, accurate, data-entry volunteer needed who is skilled in Excel and Microsoft Office. Must sign a confidentiality agreement, commit to up to 60 hours over a two- to six-week period at Girls Inc. Test required to assess skills.

* Summer Camp: Teens ages 16-18 needed as support staff at summer camps. 624-4757.

HOSPICE OF CHATTANOOGA

* Medical Equipment Driver: Drive to various locations to pick up and deliver donated medical equipment. 892-4289, ext. 256 or 257.

HUMANE EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY

* Pet Socialization: Spend one-on-one time with shelter animals to exercise, play and love them.

* Pet Therapy: Accompany pets to assisted-living homes for visits with residents. 624-5302, ext. 228.

MCKAMEY ANIMAL CARE & ADOPTION CENTER

* Cat & Dog Caregivers: Show animals love and attention, exercise puppies or older dogs in the play yards.

* Fostering: Keep a dog, cat, kittens or pups in your home overnight or until adopted.

* Transportation: Take animals to adoption centers, rescue organizations or other centers.

* Adoption: Assist with animal handling and presentation at local pet stores that sponsor weekend adoptions. Volunteers must attend an orientation class, which is held every Thursday evening at the center. www.mckameyanimalcenter.org or call 305-6500.

NATIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR MUSEUM OF MILITARY HISTORY

* Museum Archival Technician: Do historical research, clerical filing, data entry and display creation at 2200 N. Chamberlain Road. Hours are 1-8 p.m. Tuesday, 2-8 p.m. Wednesday, and 11 a.m.-5 p.m.Thursday.

* Museum Attendant: Volunteer at museum inside Northgate Mall. Training provided, must be prompt, self-starter and a good communicator. 326-0839 or mparks8192@yahoo.com.

PARTNERSHIP FOR FAMILIES, CHILDREN AND ADULTS

* Carpentry: Handyman needed to build bookshelves for children's books. Materials provided, volunteer must have own tools.

* Hot-line training: Two-week training to answer domestic violence/sexual assault hot line starts in September.

* Furniture Movers: A small team of volunteers needed to move furniture for elderly clients.

* Tutors: GED preparation and college-level help needed for adult residents in New Vision program. 697-3830.

* Volunteer Training: Orientation for sexual assault advocates serving in partnership's sexual assault clinic begins in September. 755-2734.

Re:Start -- The Center for Adult Education

* Test Proctor: Proctor tests 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. No training required. 855-4443.

SAMARITAN CENTER

* Custodial Help: Maintain cleanliness of food pantry and other areas.

* Nurses: Take blood pressure readings and answer medical questions for shoppers and clients two to four hours per week.

* Fundraising Assistance: Help with fundraising-related office duties such as copying/collating materials, preparing mailings, processing registrations, setting up the day of event.

* Office Assistant: Make copies, compile reports, create spread sheets, assist with large mailings and file. Interpersonal/telephone skills are a plus.

* Receptionist: Provide lunchtime coverage and/or temporary coverage when receptionist is away; must possess excellent interpersonal/telephone skills.

* Volunteer/Programs Assistant: Duties include compiling reports, researching data, thank-you telephone calls, processing volunteer applications, assisting with mailings; must have computer skills, know how to operate copy machine and fax machine, friendly, possess good communication skills, and able to work with others. 238-7777, ext. 22.

SISKIN HOSPITAL FOR PHYSICAL REHABILITATION

* Front-Desk Receptionist: Greet visitors, answer phones, direct vendors and guests throughout campus, perform light clerical duties. Some clinical or rehabilitation background preferred. Volunteer for a minimum of eight hours per week and receive free use of hospital's fitness center. Applicants must provide two written letters of recommendation. Apply online at www.SiskinRehab.org.

TENNESSEE RIVER GORGE TRUST

* Weekly Work Group: Help with invasive plant removal, trail maintenance, trash pickup along trails 1:30-4 p.m. each Thursday at Pot Point Cabin.

UNITED WAY'S VOLUNTEER CENTER

* Alzheimer's Association: Office help needed two to four hours at a time, either sporadically or on a continuing schedule; also event staff needed. 265-3600

* Breast Cancer Network of Strength: Opportunities include ambassadors, host/hostess for educational series, office assistant, prosthesis fitter or support group facilitator (must be at least one-year survivor of cancer, training required.) 622-4454.

* Caris Health Care: Hospice provider enrolling Amazing Grace volunteers. Must be age 16 or older. 899-4044.

* Chattanooga Community Kitchen: Receptionists needed at front desk of new day-care center. Flexible scheduling; shifts open 7 a.m.-5 p.m. every day. 756-4222.

* Chattanooga Room in the Inn: Supervise resident children, assist with crafts and projects while their mothers participate in life skills courses. May volunteer individually or with a group. Shifts available Monday, Tuesday or Thursday, 6:30-8 p.m. 624-6144.

* Creative Discovery Museum: Community-relations volunteers needed to lead interactive art and science activities at local events, promote museum education programs and distribute information about coming programs. Training provided. kes@cdmfun.org or 648-6046.

* Foster Grandparent Program: Ages 60 and older needed to serve as mentors, tutors and caregivers for at-risk children and youth with special needs. Will work with variety of community organizations, Head Start and day-care centers. 757-5273.
