Jessie Addison

Jessie Addison, 85, of Chattanooga, passed away at her residence Saturday, July 4, 2009.

Arthur Allen II

Arthur M. Allen II, 89, of Lookout Mountain, passed away Friday, July 3, 2009, in a local hospital.

He was a deacon and elder at First Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga. Mr. Allen was a graduate of McCallie School and the University of Tennessee, where he played on the basketball team. He was the owner of Arthur Allen Realty and had been active in Gideons International and the Union Gospel Mission. He had coached youth baseball on Lookout Mountain and enjoyed hunting, fishing and tennis.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Allen; parents, Walter S. Allen Sr. and Frances Morris Allen; and two brothers, Walter S. Allen Jr. and Eugene Allen.

Survivors include his daughter, Mary Baird, and her husband, Andrew, of Arlington, Va.; and three grandchildren, Andrew C. Baird III, of Washington, D.C., Davis Allen Baird, and Owen Cason Baird, both of Arlington, Va.

The family would like to express special thanks to the current team of caregivers: Mae Carpenter, Jonathan Butler, April Hollingsworth and Robin Daniel.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church with Joel Treick and Mike Preg officiating.

Dr. Thomas Barr Jr.

Dr. Thomas A. Barr Jr., of Huntsville, Ala., formerly of Chattanooga, died Monday, June 29, 2009, in Huntsville following a yearlong struggle with brain cancer.

Dr. Barr is most remembered as a loving husband, brother, father and grandfather and a caring mentor and friend.

Dr. Barr was a respected physicist, researcher and professor. His areas of expertise included plasma physics, high- energy and gas-dynamic lasers, laser kinetics and nonlinear optics.

Dr. Barr was born Aug. 18, 1924, in Chattanooga where he lived during his childhood and attended Chattanooga High School class of 1942. He served in the Air Force in World War II, enlisting in 1943 as a private and aviation cadet. He was initially assigned to Washington University in St. Louis, where he studied meteorology. He then attended officer’s training school at Yale University in 1944-45, becoming a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps, and then serving as a first lieutenant in the USAF reserves from 1946-51. In 1947, he earned a BS in physics from the University of Chattanooga, and went on to earn an M.S. (1950) and Ph.D. (1953) in physics and math from Vanderbilt University in Nashville. While there, he met his future wife, Dorothy Parkman, of Montgomery, Ala., whom he married in 1949.

During the early to mid-1950s, Dr. Barr held joint appointments at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., where he was an assistant professor of physics. In 1956, Dr. Barr began his long career as a research physicist at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala., designing wind tunnels and lasers among many other accomplishments. Upon retiring from Redstone Arsenal in 1982, he joined the faculty of the University of Alabama in Huntsville as a research professor in physics. He also served as senior scientist and officer for Technology Research Associates, and he established Barr Development Co., doing technical and scientific analysis of worldwide laser and related technologies.

Dr. Barr was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, a member of the American Association of Physics Teachers, as well as a member of several other Physics societies. He was the author of numerous scientific publications, and he held sixteen U.S. patents for research-related inventions.

He was an active member in the Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Huntsville and was a charter member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Huntsville. He was an accomplished woodworker with a special interest in building grandfather and pendulum clocks. He was also an avid coin collector and a beekeeper. He was well known for his ability to fix just about anything, and he frequently contributed his energy and skills to helping friends and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas A. and Nellie S. Barr, of Chattanooga, and two grandchildren, Steven and Rusty Barr, of Decatur, Ala.

Dr. Barr is survived by his wife, Dorothy Parkman Barr; two sons, Russell T. Barr and wife, Sandy, of Decatur, and Douglas P. Barr and wife, Catherine, of Huntsville; three daughters, Peggy Barr and husband, Chris Stuart, of Del Mar, Calif., Kathy Fourroux and husband, Marvin, of Madison, Ala., and Mary Barr, of Los Alamos, N.M.; seven grandchildren, Erin Barr, Georgia Kate and Jackson Stuart, Brian and Jennifer Fourroux, Caroline and Sarah Barr; and one sister, Gloria A. Barr, of Chattanooga.

A memorial service and interment of the ashes will be held on July 7, 2009, at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Huntsville, followed by a reception.

Mildred Bennett

Mildred Bennett, 78, of Hixson, passed away Saturday, July 4, 2009.

She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and was retired from DuPont as a registered nurse. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Bennett was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Albert Bennett, and a son, Charles Michael Bennett.

Survivors are her children, Gail Watkins, of Nashville, Tim (Pam) Bennett, of Aiken, S.C., and Martha (Mark) Gregory, of Hixson; a sister, Sue Jones, of Carlsbad, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.

Hilda Chase

Hilda Medley Chase, 70, of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, July 2, 2009.

The family will receive friends at Turner Funeral Home from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a graveside service at 2 p.m. at Lakewood Memory Gardens, West, with Minister Reece Fauscett officiating.

Rev. Willie Clark

The Rev. Willie Dan Clark, 76, departed this life June 27, 2009.

Mr. Clark was born and raised in Grantville, Ga., before moving to Chattanooga.

He was pastor of First Baptist Church of Lookout Mountain for six years and then Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he served for 34 years before retiring.

Mr. Willie D. Clark was preceded in death by his parents, Willie H. and Dora; brother, Russell; sister, Mary Ellen; and daughter, Cynthia Clark-Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Callie J. Clark; daughters, Deborah and Sabrina; sons, Anthony (Barbara) Vincent (Meshona), Willie (Patricia) and Douglas; grandchildren, Keisha, Ariel, Alex, Anthony II , Michelle, Neaisha and Pierre; son-in-law, Willie Smith; brothers, William (Sylvia), James (Juanita), Emmit (Janice); sisters, Nellie Robinson and Mattie Sims; brother-in-law, Sidney (Francis) Eberhart; sister-in-law, Nancy Montgomery; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The home-going celebration will be held at 11 a.m. today, July 6, 2009, at Orchard Knob Baptist Church.

George Eugene Elmore, 72, of Hixson, died Friday, July 3, 2009.

Troye Foster

Troye James Foster, 87, of Ooltewah, died Saturday, July 4, 2009, in a local health care facility.

Mr. Foster was co-owner of Floor Coverings Inc. and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Marines and was wounded in the Battle of Saipan. He was a member of the VFW.

Mr. Foster was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Jean Parsons Foster, and was a son of the late Clifford and Carrie Ann Foster.

Survivors include two daughters, Christine Robertson and Betty Foster, both of Ooltewah; two grandchildren, Kevin Robertson, Ooltewah, and Will Robertson, Huntsville, Ala.; brother, Larry Foster, Richmond, Va.; sister, Grace Capps, Knoxville; and three nephews, Ashley Capps and Neal Capps, both of Knoxville, and Alex Foster, Richmond, Va.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, 2009, in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Darrell Charles Henderson, 49, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at a local hospital.

He was a faithful member of Warren Chapel AME Church and was a 1977 graduate of Riverside High School.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela Henderson; children, Darnesha Henderson, Antwaun Moffett and stepson, Antonio Davenport; mother, Johnnie E. Henderson; sister, Janet Zackery; brother, Kenneth (Palmira) Henderson; aunt, Alice Henderson; a devoted friend, Cortez Harmon; and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Frank Ingram

Frank M. Ingram, 83, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, July 4, 2009, in a local hospital.

He was born Dec. 7, 1925, and was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he worked for the DuPont Company for 34 years. Frank was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Chattanooga and the Parks Sunday School Class.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Rolena Ingram; three daughters, Susan Thurman and husband, Tom, Judy Liner and husband, Chip, and Cindy Koltnow and husband, Dennis, all of Chattanooga; five grandchildren, P.J. Koltnow, Amy Allen, Betsy Schubert, Erin Thurman and Jim Thurman; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services and a celebration of Frank’s life will be held at First Baptist Church of Chattanooga at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, 2009, with Dr. Jack McEwen officiating.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from noon until 2 p.m. in the church vestibule, located at 401 Gateway Ave., Chattanooga.

Pallbearers are P.J. Koltnow, Jim Thurman, John Allen, Pierce Schubert, Doug Hof and Warren Ingram. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Parks Sunday School Class.

Corey was an employee of Sticky Fingers Restaurant at Hamilton Place and Bookkeeping Solutions. He was an avid car enthusiast and was of the Baptist faith.

Raymond Thompson

Raymond Thompson, 74, of Chattanooga, was born Aug. 22, 1934, and departed this life June 30, 2009.

As a member of the Church of Jesus, he was baptized and ordained a deacon under the leadership of the late General Overseer, Mrs. Helena Billups (Mother Five), and ministered to by Pastor Sims Bledsoe.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Thompson, and parents, Arthur and Josephine Hall Thompson.

He is survived by children, David Thompson, Mary (Owen) Smith, Ed (Cheryl) Paris, Philip Taylor, Claudia (Clyde) Taylor, Ronnie (Renee) Thompson, Ricky Thompson and Kenneth (Marva) Paris; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Ruby (Jeremiah) Lindo; sister-in-law, Barnette (Dave) Thompson; brothers, Marvin (Liz) Thompson and Robert (Charlene); and a host of other relatives and friends.

DUNLAP — Robert Burke Hardin Sr., 85, formerly of Naranja, Fla., died at his home Saturday, July 4, 2009.

Mr. Hardin was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Nichols and Elizabeth Alderman Hardin; son, Kenneth Clark; daughter, Brenda Clark; and sister, Betty Atkinson.

SEWANEE — Jeramie T. Layne, 31, passed away Saturday, July 4, 2009, in Alvin C. York V.A. Medical Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Jeramie had been a general aviation repairman in the U.S. Air Force, was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Shriners.

Survivors include his wife, Wanna Layne, Sewanee; son, Robert Valid-Laync, Sewanee; parents, Johnny R. Layne, Michael Meeks Sr. and Beverly (Stephen) Farris; brothers and sisters, Michael Meeks II, Summer Meeks, Kristy Layne and Jonathan Layne; maternal grandparents, Frank and Joyce Gipson, Alfred and Betty Layne; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Nora Hughes

TRENTON — Nora Dell Forester Hughes, 91, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 4, 2009.

She was born in Rising Fawn, Ga., to Frank and Berths McBrayer Forester and lived 85 of her 91 years in Dade County. Nora was a member of the Floral Crest Seventh-day Adventist Church.

In addition to her parents, Nora was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Guy R. Hughes; two sons, Donald R. and Tommy F. Hughes; two half brothers, Farris and Fred Forester; and half sister, Mamie Forester.

She is survived by her son, R. David and his wife Becky Hughes; daughter, Marian Hughes, all of Trenton; grandchildren, Suzanne (Randall) Franks and Thomas M. Hughes; great-grandchildren, Hailie S. Hughes, Kaitlyn and Ann Franks; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. EDT Tuesday in the Ryan Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Billy Mitchell officiating.

Interment will be in Sarah Chapel Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Lonnie Ellison, George Walden, Michael Hughes, Randall Franks, Dave Schuman and Stan Hartline.

RINGGOLD — Jimmy Mathis, 77, died Sunday, July 5, 2009, in a local hospital.

He was a retired ceramic tile contractor.

Russell Spaulding

FORT OGLETHORPE — Russell Denis Spaulding, 74, passed away Thursday, July 2, 2009.

Spaulding was born Sept. 13, 1934, in Covington, Ky. He served in the United States Army, 1st and 8th Infantry Divisions. He attained his B.A. in secondary education from Morehead State University in Morehead, Ky., studied elementary education at Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio, and received his M.Ed. degree from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.

A career educator, his first love was teaching. Spaulding served as a teacher, principal and school administrator, including serving 14 years as Superintendent of the Mason City School District in Mason Ohio, from 1973-1987. He was a member of the Rotary Club, the Kiwanis Club, the Jaycees, the Shriners and the Masons. He was director of the Scottish Heritage Program at Lyon College, Batesville, Ark., and served as the executive director of the Ozark Scottish Festival, held each April at the college, from 1989-1992.

A lifelong musician, Spaulding was best known as a bagpiper, piping instructor, pipe major, composer and as publisher of two books: “The Spaulding Collection” and “A Piper’s Primer” for the Great Highland Bagpipe. He studied piping under the renowned Scottish piper, Duncan Johnstone. He was a past pipe major of the Pipes and Drums of Arkansas College, the Caledonian Pipes and Drums of Cincinnati and the Syrian Temple Scots of Cincinnati, where he served as pipe major for the Scots band that won the Imperial Piping Championship in 1989. He served briefly as pipe major for the Alhambra Shrine Pipes and Drums locally. He was a founding member and the original pipe major for the City of Chattanooga Pipe Band from 1999-2008.

Spaulding’s leadership, dedication to teaching and contribution to the preservation of Scottish bagpipe music touched countless lives. The piping community in particular has lost a valued mentor and cherished friend.

Spaulding was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie Mae Moore Spaulding and Roy Tilton Spaulding.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Deborah Y. Simpson Spaulding; brother, Roy Spaulding; son, Scott Spaulding; daughters, Gretta Spaulding and Melody Spaulding Farmer; grandchildren, Morgan and Collin Farmer; stepson, Joseph Simpson; stepdaughter, Sharm Simpson Perry; and his beloved dog, Murray.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel.

Interment will follow in National Cemetery with full military honors.

Honorary pallbearers will include representatives from the City of Chattanooga Pipe Band and the Alhambra Shrine Pipes and Drums.

LaFAYETTE — Herbert Young, 80, died Sunday, July 5, 2009.

Survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Frances (Kenny) Gillespie, of LaFayette, Va., (Freddy) Brown, Ider, Ala.; son and daughters-in-law, Herbert (Gloria) Young, Rock Spring, Ga., Jerry (Brenda) Young, LaFayette, Vester (Vickey) Young, LaFayette; sisters, Jean Cole, Walling, Tenn., Alice Holman, Sparta, Tenn., Bertha Lawson, LaFayette; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral at Wallis-Wilbanks Funeral Home at 3 p.m. on Tuesday with the Rev. Eddie Killian and the Rev. Wilton Grimes officiating.

Interment LaFayette Cemetery.

Visitation is today 5-9 p.m.

CROSSVILLE — John William Howard Sr., 67, passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2009.

Funeral service is at 4:30 p.m. CDT Wednesday at W.T. Wilson Funeral Chapel in Rainsville.

The family will receive friends today 5:30-9 p.m. CDT and from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. CDT Tuesday.

Joseph Frangipane

WESTMINSTER, S.C. — Joseph Robert Frangipane, 72, died Friday, July 3, 2009, at his residence.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a retired business consultant and a member of the St. Paul Apostle Catholic Church.

Survivors include wife, Roberta Lee Frangipane; son, Greg Frangipane, of Cumming, Ga.; daughters, Denise Land, of Lewis Chapel, Tenn., Donna Frangipane, of Dacula, Ga., Mary Steinkirchner, of Roswell, Ga., and Jo-Anne Schmitz, of Alpharetta, Ga.; sisters, Rose Marie Santilli and Joan Saracino, both of Long Island, N.Y.; and nine grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 13, 2009, at St. Frances Catholic Church in Walhalla.

The family will receive friends 5-7:30 p.m., today, July 6, 2009, with a prayer service following at 7:30 at the funeral home.
