You've probably seen the ads for Subway's $5 Meal Deal and KFC's $5 Complete Meal. That price tag hasn't been seen in quite some time, but it seems to be a new buzzword in the depressed economy.
Restaurant industry researcher Malcolm Knapp (www.malcolmknapp.com) says $5 is a magic number for a sit-down meal because it's affordable to most any diner.
National fast-food chains aren't the only restaurants rallying around Mr. Lincoln. Many local establishments are carving out $5 specials or promoting deals already on the menu. The choices aren't limited to burgers and sandwiches, which are commonly among the cheapest menu items.
Chad Danner, general manager/owner of T-Bones on Chestnut Street, said his $4.99 lunch specials are going strong. They include a Fritos chili pie and side salad, five Buffalo wings and fries, a chicken salad plate and hamburger steak.
"We wanted to offer them to people who only had a certain amount of money to spend but still want wanted the chance to have a restaurant meal," he said. "It's a way for people to come here and not have to cut it out of their budgets because they don't think they can afford to eat out."
Dozens of places around town will help you get your fill for $5 and change. Today, we give you several suggestions.
