Derrick Alire

Derrick S. Alire, 12, of East Brainerd, died unexpectedly Saturday, July 4, 2009, in an ATV accident.

A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, he was a 6th grade student at Ooltewah Middle School.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Walter and Mary Alire.

Survivors include his parents, Richard and Ann Alire; maternal grandparents, Fred and Roberta Henderson, Hixson; Godfather and Godmother, Joey and Billie Teems, Chattanooga; several aunts, uncles, great-aunts, great-uncles, and cousins; close family friends, Jim and Nancy West, Chattanooga.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Nicky Harcrow officiating.

Interment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Frances Craig

Frances "Fran" Ford Craig, 66, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, July 6, 2009.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Ressie Ford; brother, Henry Ford; sister, Flora Ellen Hixson.

Fran is survived by her husband, Robert Craig; children, Sandy (Donnie) Barbee, Vivialee (David) Hooper, Allen (Rhonda) Staton and Wade Staton; nine grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; brother, Alfred (Teresa) Rockholt; sister-in-law, Edith Ford; and several other family members.

The family will receive friends from noon until 8 p.m. today and anytime Thursday before the service at the North Chapel.

Services for Fran will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the North Chapel with her grandson the Rev. Josh Staton officiating.

Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Ray Anthony Baker Craze, passed away Thursday, July 2, 2009, at his home in Knoxville, Tenn.

Roy Freytag

Roy Bailey Freytag, 93, of Chattanooga, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, July 6, 2009, at Soddy-Daisy Healthcare Center.

Roy was born in Wartburg, Tenn., on July 8, 1916. He retired from Southern Railway after 38 years of service and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Hixson. Roy was a lifetime member of Hixson Masonic Lodge 727 F&AM and the Alhambra Shrine Temple.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Freytag.

He is survived by his son, Doug (Sara) Freytag; daughter, Phyllis (Larry) Cate; grandchildren Bryan (Hope) Freytag, Julia (Scott) Lancaster, Lisa Shadden, Chris (Desirae) Palmer; great-grandchildren, Bailey Lancaster, Chance Freytag, Kellyn Capps and Addyson Palmer, and a brother, AB (Naomi) Freytag of Wartburg, Tenn.

Visitation is at North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. today.

Services for Roy will be held at 11:30 a.m. today at the North Chapel with Dr. David McNabb and Dr. Darreyl Duggar officiating.

Burial will be private for the family only.

Howard Max Greene, 73, of Signal Mountain, died Sunday, July 5, 2009, in a local hospital.

Kerna Hicks, 79, of Hixson passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2009, in an area healthcare facility.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roby D. Hicks, and brother, Henry Headrick.

Survivors include her son, George W. Hendricks of Hixson; daughter, Debbie E. Bumbalough of Watertown, Tenn.; brother, Laurice Headrick of Rossville, Ga.; grandchildren, Laura Dansbury, Amos Wilson and Jesse Wilson.

Milburn L. Hindmon, 97, passed away Monday, July 6, 2009, in a local hospital.

He was a member of City Church of Chattanooga and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Norma Kanipe

Norma Jean Kanipe, of. Chattanooga, died Sunday, July 5, 2009.

Born in Youngstown, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mabel King Martin.

She was educated in the Chattanooga Public Schools, and was a retired secretary with the Department of Defense.

Her husband Bruce Kanipe preceded her in death.

Surviving is her sister-in-law, Esther Sue Kanipe of Clinton, New York.

A graveside service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Forest Hills Cemetery.

Raymond Logan

Raymond Lebron "Rain Doc" Logan, 42, of Chattanooga passed Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at a local hospital.

He was a member of Greater Faith Temple.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Frances Crook; grandparents, Elgie Moore and Edward Lester.

Survivors include a sister, Angela Thomas; brother, Kenneth "Kenny Mac" McKamey; sister-in-law, Jacqueline McKamey; nieces and nephews, Tamaya McKamey, Talisa Elgie Thomas, Alexis Corbin, Kenisha McKamey, James C. Chappail Moore

Chappail "Chappy" Littleone Moore, 33, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, July 6, 2009, at a local hospital.

He was a resident of Orange Grove Center.

Chappy had a love for music and will be greatly missed by all his caregivers.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Gloria H. Moore.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Jimmy Lee Moore, Jr., and Joan Moore; five siblings, Jimmy Moore III, Tawana Howard, Narice Moore, Markell Moore, Anthony Moore, all of Chattanooga; two special aunts, Lucille Priest and Gloria Edmonds; and several other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held noon on Thursday in the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Chaplain Christy Bonner officiating.

Mary D. Ollila, 73, of Chattanooga departed this life Monday, July 6, 2009, at her home.

She was born in Chattanooga to the late George and Lora Croft Nunnalley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jeff Ollila.

Mary was owner/operator of Central Hearing Aid Center in Rossville for 30 years.

Survivors include her two sisters.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Gustavo Santos Jr., 62, of Collegedale, died Saturday, July 4, 2009, at his home.

He was a member of Collegedale Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Alaina Nicole Skidmore, infant daughter of Tia Skidmore and Cody Knight, passed away Saturday, July 4, 2009.

Dusty Stokes

Sgt. Donnie "Dusty" Ray Stokes, 36, of Harrison, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, July 6, 2009, in a local hospital surrounded by family and loved ones.

He was a sergeant for the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He was a lifelong member of Greenwood Baptist Church where he served as an AWANA Director.

Dusty was an active member of Harrison Masonic Lodge 114 F&AM. He had coached youth baseball for Snowhill Recreation and later served as the 7-8 and 9-10 year old commissioner.

Dusty touched many lives in his church, community and his line of work.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Ronelle Stokes; son, Austin Armour; parents, Donald "Duck" Stokes and Janice Barnard; parents-in-law, Rickey and Pam Stafford and Ronnie and Kathy Willerson; two brothers, David (Lisa) Stokes and Chris Barnard; sister-in-law, Cyndi (David) Ford; brother-in-law, Ron Willerson; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews; and a host of other friends and relatives.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. today at Bayside Baptist Church with the Rev. Toby Brogden and the Rev. James Vaughn officiating.

Burial will follow at New McDonald Cemetery with Ronnie Brown, Ronnie Blaylock, Eugene McCallie, Wayne Griffin, Greg Smith, Randy Roark, Grant Parker and Travis Wheeler serving as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department.

Robert Howland

HERMITAGE -- Sgt. First Class Robert T. "Buddy" Howland, 51, died Saturday, July 4, 2009.

Robert served his country with the 82nd Airborne Division and was a recruiter for the Tennessee Army National Guard for many years.

He was a graduate of Non-Commission Officer's School, Jungle Warfare School, Parachute School and Recruiting School at Fort Benjamin Harrison. He was awarded many honors and awards during his military career. Robert was a graduate of Red Bank High School, Class of 1976. He was a devoted member of New Hope Baptist Church in Hermitage for over 20 years.

Robert was a loving, kind and religious man who loved his family and his church. He will be missed greatly. Robert was preceded in death by his sister, Pamela Howland Garrett; and his grandparents, Charles and Edna Howland and Rufus J. and Pansy W. Jarnagin.

He is survived by children, Hayley Olivia Howland, Chase Howland and Chandler Howland; parents, Robert C. and Rosetta J. Howland; brother, David W. Howland; sister, Kathy A. Mundis; nieces, Kellie Siedel, Brooke Garrett and Jordyn Howland; and nephew, Joshua Howland.

Graveside services with full military honors will be conducted 12:30 p.m. EDT today, July 8, 2009, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Lt. Col. Bill Henry officiating.

DAYTON -- Betty Laher, passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2009, in a local hospital.

She was of the Methodist faith.

Her parents, Amanda Day and Garland A. Porter, Sr.; brothers, Jimmy Porter and Charles D. Porter and; sisters, Virginia A. Porter and Emma P. Miller preceded her in death.

Survivors include her sons, Keith (Teresa) Layer and Jay (Lynnette) Layer; daughter, Debbie (Charles) Roberts; brothers, Garland A. Porter, Jr. and David (Sandra) Porter; sister, Lucretia (Kermit) Travis; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Leo Lebos Jr.

BRENTWOOD -- Leo Lebos Jr., 67, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2009, in his home.

He was born in Asheville, N.C., son of the late Mary Elizabeth Hubbard and the late Leo Lebos Sr. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sherrell A. Lebos; and son, Leo Lebos III.

Survivors include his daughter, Tracy Lebos, of Brentwood and his brother, Richard Lebos, of Chicago.

Mr. Lebos' successful 35 years in the insurance industry started at Interstate Life & Accident Co. in Chattanooga, continued at Gulf Life Insurance Co. in Jacksonville and American General Life and Accident Insurance Co. in Nashville. He retired in 1999 as Vice President and Chief Actuary at American General Life and Accident.

The family will receive visitors Friday, July 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Brentwood-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home, 9010 Church Street East.

The memorial tribute service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 11, also at the funeral home.

WHITWELL -- Hazel Ross, 78, passed away Monday, July 6, 2009, in a local hospital.

Mrs. Ross was a teacher in the Marion County School System for over 40 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, of 43 years, Leslie L. Ross; parents, Charles W. and Pearl Hudson Mitchell; and her brother, Paul Mitchell.

Survivors include her son, Bruce W. Ross, daughter-in-law, Suzanne Edge Ross; two grandchildren, Holly Renee Ross and Charles Leslie Ross.

Dr. Paul Baker Jr.

LaFAYETTE -- Dr. Paul Washington Baker Jr., passed away Monday, July 6, 2009, after an extended illness.

He was a lifelong resident of LaFayette and practiced dentistry there for many years. He was a charter member of LaFayette Elks Lodge, a member of the LaFayette Lions Club and First United Methodist Church of LaFayette. He served in the Army during World War II and the Korean War.

He was predeceased by his son Lewis Jeffrey Baker.

Dr. Baker is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jeanette Almond Baker; his daughters, Jana Baker McCann and husband, John, Susan Baker Coker and husband, Dale; and son, Paul Washington Baker III; seven grandchildren, Warren Rhodes Hall Jr. and wife, Mace, Christopher Baker Hall and wife, Sharena, Lee Martin Hall, Paul Washington Baker IV, Courtney Suzanne Baker, Laura Jeanette Coker and Scott Jeffrey Coker; and great-grandchildren, Rhodes Huckabee Hall, Randall Georgia Hall, Adams Baker Hall, Ramey Kate Hall, William Taylor Baker, Robert Benjamin Baker, James David Baker and Guner Conway Henderson.

Loving caregivers Troy Cornett and Cassandra Sampley survive as well as special family friends, Jim and Edith Hartline.

Johnnie Huggins

TUNNEL HILL -- Johnnie I. Huggins died Monday, July 6, 2009, after a lengthy illness.

She was well known in North Georgia Democratic circles and worked tirelessly in support of Democratic candidates. Johnnie was a career woman and had worked all of her life in Dalton in the textile, hotel, and financial services industries. Johnnie was well loved by her friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Winnie Huggins; sister, Elaine "Tootsie" Roberts; and her brother, Larry Huggins.

She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Eddie Farris, of Lancaster, S.C.; nieces, Julie Rice, of Atlanta, and Wendy Stokes, of Lancaster; nephews, John Roberts, of Cartersville and Smokey Farris, of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; several cousins.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 9 from the chapel of Jones Funeral Home of Tunnel Hill with the Rev. Tom Phipps officiating.

Glenda Owensby

KENNESAW -- Glenda Diane Owensby, 57, formerly of Rossville, died Monday, July 6, 2009, in a Marietta, Ga., hospital.

She was a member of Shiloh Church of Christ, and a graduate of Rossville High School and was retired from South Central Bell.

Mrs. Owensby was preceded in death by her brother, Dennis Yates; and her father, Clell Yates.

Survivors are husband, Michael Owensby; daughter, Kimberly (Gene) Kelsey, Marietta; mother and step-father, Maxine and Damon Gang, Rossville; sister, Brenda Smith, Fort Oglethorpe; and granddaughter, Madison Kelsey.

Bill Pack

LAFAYETTE -- William "Bill" Adair Pack, 78, died Monday, July 6, 2009.

Bill was born Jan. 19, 1931, to William and Elizabeth Pack of Walker County.

He attended LaFayette High School and graduated from Combustion Engineering School of Drafting, where he was employed for 33 years.

He was a member of Worldwide Church of God for 32 years, and served as an Elder. His recent affiliation and membership was with First Baptist Church of LaFayette, where he served as deacon.

Bill was known as a gentle, loving, Godly man. One of his greatest joys was serving and giving to others.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Evan, Edgar, and Clifford Pack; sisters, Lula Mae Tucker, Myrtle Smith, Lucille Betty and Ethel Pack.

Survivors: wife, Myra Sue Pledger Pack, LaFayette; daughter, Rinda Sue Pack, Rossville; son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Diana Pack, LaFayette; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services at Wallis Memorial Chapel, Thursday, 11 a.m., conducted by Mr. David Currie, the Rev. Tom Airial and Dr. Todd Gaddis.

Daniel Randall

FORT OGLETHORPE -- Daniel Randall, 30, passed away Saturday, July 4, 2009.

Mr. Randall was born in Austell, Ga., and raised in the Fort Oglethorpe area. He enjoyed playing his guitar and was a talented artist.

Survivors include his wife, Heather Randall; children, Justin, Joshua, Michael, and Sarah; parents, Herb and Helen Parker; sisters, Angel Randall and Brittany Parker; brother, Christopher Parker; niece, Kyndall Rinehart and nephew, Trevor Baker.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Butch Varner officiating.

Burial will be private.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

LAFAYETTE -- Ruby Elaine "Dutch" Webb, 84, died Sunday, July 5, 2009.

Survivors: daughters, Pamela Webb, Stacey Wadhwani, both of Cartersville; sons, Barry Webb, Cartersville, Dennis Webb, Santiago, Calif., Michael Webb, LaFayette; sister, Bonnie Thompson, Chattanooga; brother, Bill Tanner, Alabama; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

RINGGOLD -- Julia "Judy" Denman Wiggins, 84, departed this life on Monday, July 6, 2009, and entered the gates of Paradise to reside with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for eternity.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Richard E. Clark and the Hon. William Ralph Hill Jr. officiating.

FLAT ROCK -- Douglas William Hicks, 64, died Monday, July 6, 2009.

He is survived by his wife, Semmie Hicks, Flat Rock; one daughter, Tara Scott, Whiteside, Tenn.; one sister, Linda Datson, Rossville, Ga.; four brothers, Rudy Hicks, Tiftonia, Tenn., Mickey Hicks, Trenton, Ga., David Hicks and Roger Hicks, both of Rossville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. EDT Friday in the Ryan Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. James Dotson officiating.

Interment will be in Payne Gap Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 9 p.m. today and Thursday.
