Georgia receiver Ambles commits to Volunteers

KNOXVILLE -- The University of Tennessee apparently didn't need an elite 2010 quarterback commitment to snag one of the nation's top wide receiver prospects.

Markeith Ambles, a prime prospect from Henry County High School in McDonough, Ga., committed to first-year UT coach Lane Kiffin on Tuesday morning. He became the Volunteers' 13th public 2010 pledge.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Ambles is ranked by Rivals.com as the nation's seventh-best senior receiver and the No. 43 overall prospect. He is the highest ranked player in UT's 2010 class, edging out Ooltewah High defensive end Jacques Smith (No. 64).

Ambles had dozens of offers -- including Alabama, Florida, Auburn, Florida State, Oregon, Notre Dame, UCLA, California, West Virginia and Ole Miss -- but said he ultimately felt most comfortable with the Vols. As planned, he made his decision after attending Florida's "Friday Night Lights" festivities last weekend.

"It was just time to (commit) because it's time to get ready for the season," Ambles said. "Tennessee and Florida were both great, but I just thought I fit in better at Tennessee ... and I felt like they wanted me more."

Ambles said he was "so happy" to finish his recruiting process but said he planned to help the Vols recruit this fall and winter -- specifically at quarterback.

"(Coaches) want me to help, and I think I can do that," Ambles said. "I'm definitely going to try."
