Tennessee: House sponsor abandons medical privacy bill

NASHVILLE — The House sponsor of a proposal to give parents full access to their children’s medical records has withdrawn the measure from consideration.

The bill sponsored by Rep. Tony Shipley, a Kingsport Republican, was taken off notice without explanation in the House Budget Subcommittee on Tuesday.

Shipley’s bill would require doctors to provide copies of written results of any test or procedure performed on a minor upon request from a parent or guardian.

Legislative analysts have warned the proposal could jeopardize about $6.5 million in federal family planning funding that carries privacy requirements.

The companion bill had stalled on a 1-1 vote with seven abstentions in the Senate General Welfare Committee.
